HWY., NORTH VAN. 986-6566 | NEWS photo Tom Burley Cross-country a challenge A POPULAR misconception about cross-country skiing is that it is easier to master than downhill skiing, says Benno Jaeger of Ben- no’s Country Advencure Tours. The basic rules of cross-country don’t take Jong to learn but aspects of the ‘classic’ or ‘‘skating’’ styles can take years to pick up, he says. “It’s true that you can learn the basics of cross-country skiing in a few days, but it takes much longer to get to the top,”’ said Jaeger. Because of the enormous popu- larity of downhill skiing, most of us believe that the thrill of skiing can only be achieved with high speed — another misconception, says Jaeger. **‘People think there’s no challenge to cross-country. They don’t realize that there’s a lot of skill behind it.” Jaeger says achieving coordina- ‘tion between arms and legs takes time and skill, and so does getting the right rhythm. And it takes a lot of skill to master downhill skiing in cross-country. “Downhill is much more dif- ficult in cross-country skiing because you don’t have the sup- port of your equipment to assist you.”” Another thing people are un- aware of is that you don’t have to be in shape to begin cross-country, says Jaeger. There are many well- groomed trails in B.C. that enable almost anyone to ski. ‘*You can choose the terrain and learn techniques on simple ter- rain,’’ says Jaeger. He says that in one hour, most people can ski 10 kilometres on easy terrain.
