POLICE AND [CBC investiga-
tions of suspicious auto insurance
claims have resulted in a record
number of criminal charges being
laid in March.

A dazen people face . between
them 24 counts of fraud in claims
estimated to be worth over
$100,000.

The 24 counts represent the
largest number of charges ever jaid
in one month involving ICBC in-
surance fraud.

to have suffered accident injuries
when they were not even. in the
vehicle involved. Others claimed
lost wages duc to injuries while
they continued to. work. Some
reported theft or hit and run inci-
dents that never happened.

Said Walt Bardua, ICBC vice-
president of claims, ‘‘While it's
difficult to conclusively estimate
the total cost of auto vinsurance
fraud, that cost is measured in the
millions of dollars. "
