Payne described the museum's present inadequate facilities and said, ‘‘The North Shore is large enough, rich enough and mature enough to collect, preserve and present the story of our history to present and future generations.”’ Payne said a new museum would be an excellent project for the district’s Centennial, which is com- ing up in 1992. At present, the museum is fund- ed totally by an annual operating grant from the City of North Van- couver, Payne said the museum is in fact a department of the city. Payne noted that even though the museum is only funded by the city, ‘the collection represents the story of the entire North Shore.’’ Payne said that the museum’s current display space at Pres- entation House is ‘‘not suitable for our present collection’? and the Station Museum at Mahon Park “requires constant maintenance and repair.” The museum and archives has a large collection which includes a priceless collection of old photographs, a 1907 streetcar, wagons, sleighs, furniture and other household artifacts. A committee has been meeting on a preliminary basis to see if there is potential for cooperation between the three Worth Shore municipalities in building a new museum and archives, which would be jointly funded by the three.
