Rafting deaths ruled accidental THE FURY hearing the evidence at the coroner's inquest into the duly f Elaho River cafling trapedy has brought in five verdicts of accidental death by drowning. Testimony revealed 20-year-old guide Kyle Thorpe, the man at the helm of the ill-fated raft, was an experienced whitewater kayaker, but relatively inexperienced at pitoting loaded rafts through rapids. One of the five dead, 63-year-old Herbert Keough, apparently collapsed at a tricky point in the river called Devil's Elbow just be- fore the raft hit the log jam. Keough, Christine Patlot, 28, Elen Winterhoff, 29, all of Van- couver, Leslie Ownes, 26, of Sydney, Austratia, und Marie Steven- son, 34, of Burnaby, lost their lives in the mishap. The provincial government announced eartier this month (hat all commercial rafting operators working B.C. rivers are now subjeet to river rafting regulations. Environment and Parks Minister Bruce Strachan said although operators are expected to comply to federal boating restriction regulations immediately, commercial rafting operators have until Sept. 30 to secure operating permits. “Compliance with the new regulations and standards will ensure that all commercial operators meet minimum safety requirements for raft construction, operation and equipment,”’ said Strachan. Cruiser crash victim named NORTH VANCOUVER RCMP have released the name of the motorcyclist who died after colliding with a police cruiser Aug. 19. Dead is 26-year-old Joseph Serge Lalonde of 1185 Haro St., Vancouver. The driver of the police vehicle, Cst. Carl Cavaco, received minor injuries, sustaining facial cuts and bruising. The car is a write-off. Accarding to police, preliminary investigation, including infor- mation from witnesses and un examination by an independent UBC engineer, indicates the motorcyclist was travelling at a high rate of speed when he slammed into the front passenger door of the car, causing the vehicle to spin around. The accident occurred at 2:18 a.m. The police car was crossing Marine at Fell Avenue and the motorcyclist was travelling east- bound on Marine. Lalonde was taken to Lions Gate Hospital where he was pro- nounced dead on arrival, Trial set in murder charge A WOMAN ‘of no fixed address charged with second degree murder in connection with the March 15 death of Denis Leo Auger in West Vancouver was ordered Tuesday in North Vancouver pro- vincial court to stand trial in B.C. Supreme Court. . Alisha Marlene Dyke, 18, appeared in North Vancouver provin- cial court for a two-day preliminary inquiry ending Tuesday with her being ordered to trial. Dyke was originally charged June 26 with the death of the 41- year-old Auger, whose body was found by a friend beside the in- door pool of Auger’s $450,000 West Vancouver residence. Auger died of a drug overdose. Dyke, who is presently being held in custody, is slated far triai Sept. 16. Thirteen-year-old Katherine Faulkner of North Vancouver, a passenger in the rear seat of the car, remains in Lions Gate Hospi- tal intensive care unit in critical coadition.
