CONSTRUCTION of Canada Place on the downtown Vancouver waterfront is pro-
ceeding on schedule. The site of the Canadian host pavilion for Expo 86 will include a

cruise ship terminal, world trade centre, CM IMAX theatre, hotel, restaurants, plazas,
even an outside amphitheatre.

WE CANADIANS are a sav-
ing lot.

Staustics inform us that
currently (1983-84) we are
saving 14'’2 of what we earn.
That makes us the second or
third-best ‘‘savingest’’ people
in the world. The Japanese
still beat us, saving almost
20% of what they earn.

But we believe that most of
those who are doing the sav-
ing are people in their 50s and
older. They are now rapidly
trying to get together enough
dollars so that if they are fac-
ed with an early retirement —
or want to retire — they will
have a few dollars working
for them so they can ‘‘sur-
vive’’ that returement.

Problem 1s that they — and
most of us who were, or are,
younger -— tend to live up to
our income level

If we earn $500 a week
($25,000 a year) we tend to
spend $500 a week. We tend
to buy necessities such as
food and clothing, and tt
there is anything left we go
for the bigger car or the
newer house or the more

exotic vacation. In short, we
live ‘‘up’’ to Our income.

We forget two things —
One, to set a goal for future
retirement; and two, to ‘‘pay
ourselves’’.

The young man who starts
saving $SO a month at 15%,
Starting at age 21, willend up
at age 6S with more than $2
million.

The person who starts at
age 25, ends up at 65 worth
$1,227,570 — approximately
$750,000 less.

The person who starts at
age 30 ends up at age 65 with
$608,000. That’s $1,400,00
less than the person who
started at age 21.

And that poor fellow who
Starts Saving at age SO — his
$50 a month at 15% ends up
being $32,830 at age 65.

That’s why we believe you
MUST keep your spending
level below your tncome
level, You should start to
save part of what you earn
from your very tirst pay che-
que, and continue to do so
for the rest of vour life
