A7 - Sunday, June 24, 1984 - North Shore News 3 mailbox ><] Dear Editor Mr. Wickham, in his at- tack on mutual fund based retirement investments comes up with the old bugaboo of the so-called high commis- sion on mutual fund invest- ments. Does he really want his clients to believe that the an- nuity companies are charitable institutions? Let me point out that when an annuity company only takes a two per cent spread between the actual invest- ment proceeds and what is paid to the buyer of annuity, the HIDDEN cost to the an- nuitant is already about 16 per cent, and with a one per cent spread more than 7.5 per Unions Dear Editor Instead of engaging in right wing rhetoric and union bashing, you might have checked the facts about the shipbuilding industry. Korean, Japanese and other shipbuilders which you hold up as examples are, in fact, heavily subsidized by their own governments. Jhe subsidies are both direct as well as indirect. Their governments have used the shipbutiding industry to maintain and support basic and secondary industry and as a catalyst to propel them into high technology. The result is that they are now ina position to take full advan- tage of the = scienttfic- technical revolution with its mind-boggling opportunites, while Canada, and British Columbia in particular with is inept leadership and its relkance on raw materials, as being relegated more and more to the role of a pauper The compames which you state are going to Japan to buy ships because they are cheaper there, are receiving large government handouts (Canadian taxpayers’ dollars) which, with the patriotism: of a wolverine, they promptly spend in other Countries No other country permits that sort of nonsense, bcan assure you The ignorance hyprocrisy of and right owing editorial writers never ocases tO amaze me when they argue Mutual funds OK cent (based on 20 years) whereas openly, for everyone to see, the mutual fund would not charge more than five per cent on a $50,000 investment. The history of the past 15 years shows that people who entrusted their money to pooled investment specialists are laughing all the way to the bank, whereas the annui- ty buyer is crying in the supermarket. Mr. Wickham, you may have different beliefs about the economic future but don’t be so naive as to imply that you work for nothing. Cornelius Steenken North Vancouver bashed for what amounts to the dismantling of our industries in the name of old line ‘‘free competition’’, a 19th century concept to which they cling, much like the bushmen of Africa cling to the idea that the world is flat. To quote John Kenneth Galbraith, ‘‘today only con- ventional economists, graduates of second class in- Stitutions of learning and members of a lowly paid craft, still argue for the era of free competition.”’ Total mobilization of resources, both human and material, and manipulating them towards national Priorities is why other coun- tries are advancing. No ‘‘free competition’’ cobwebs in ther brains. Or, to put ato in other ®ords, the Canadian ship building workers will be just fine, provided they get the same leadership and the same breaks from their own government that others get from theirs Considering that you pro fess to have the interests of the community at heart, you nught consider arguing for the same support foe our North Shore shipbuilding oo dustry rather than, under the guise oof Cunton bashing’: and teactionary rhetoene, ArQulng Agalnst it Ernie (Crist North Vancouver draperies by S. Laursen Concentration camps suggested Dear Editor What logic and justifica- tion is behind the cost of the special insert to the North Vancouver City Property owners, with the 1984 Tax notice, that states that ac- commodating a guest in your home is against the law? The 1983 list of Bed and Breakfast homes produced by the Vancouver Conven- tion and Tourist Bureau shows a total of five residences open to take in a guest. Since then a number of Registries have started to book potential homes for short term accommodation. The Federal Government received and accepted an ap- plication for a $5,000 grant for one of the North Shore Registeries. By creating more private enterprise in the hospitality business the community receives an incredible ripple effect, if the bureaucrats know what that is. Why are we subjected to this phobia of rules and regulations? Nobody is runn- ing a public house or motel. Perhaps the like of Ms. Dean are sponsored and paid by special groups that run the motels on the North Shore.
