BS - Wednesday, November 9, 1983 - North Shore News GEE auto «a5; As _ " 1984 CAMARO LINEUP THE CAMARO lineup — unchanged from '83— again includes the sport coupe (on- ly model offered by Chevrolet with a choice of four, six or eight-’cylinder engines), the thoroughbred Z28 and the _ high-styled Berlinetta. This year, Chevrolet engineers concentrated on power train refinements up and down the line and on the startling Berlinetta cockpit. BERLINETTA From its adjustable lower back seats to its pivoting pedestal-mounted electronic radio to its roof console to its digital instrumentation and its dual adjustable fingertip control panels, the Berlinetta cockpit is a GM F car exclusive. A digital display panel directly ahead of the driver registers road speed (in either miles or kilometres) and odometer or engine speed. To the right, a vertical bar tachometer flashes with graduated urgency as rpms climb. Farther to the right, a monitor signals if its constant electronic surveillance of fluid levels and systems in- tegrity finds anything amiss. The dual adjustable con- trol panels, however, make it especially unusual. The flat black pods adjust outward from the instrument panel to within a fingertip of the steer- ing wheel. The left pod con- tains pushbutton light con- trols dnd switches controlling spé¢edometer and tachometer displays on the cluster. The right pod has pushbut- ton controls for windshield wipers and interior climate adjustments. Farther right, the pedestal- mounted Berlinetta radio swivels on a base built into the floor console. The remote receiver is concealed beneath the console. An AM-FM stereo ETR radio with digital clock is a Berineta standard feature. A tape player and a graph equalizer are optional Console also contains pushbutton controls for op- tional features like the remote rear hatch release, rear defogger, power win- dows and the rear wiper/washer system. Overhead, perhaps the first roof console in Chevrolet passenger car history is stan- dard on the Berlinetta. It contains a map light and a switch, a dome lgiht, and a pouch designed to store things like remote garage door openers or sunglasses. A flashlight, batteries includ- ed, also goes: with the console. Pushbuttons operating the optional electronic speed control, system are set into the spokes of Berlinetta’s steering wheel. Z38 The performance Camaro drops its Cross-Fire engine in 1984 in favor of the most powerful carbureted V8, code named L69. The engine was added to the Z28 lineup in late model year 1983. It is rated at 190 horsepower. It gets its extra punch from a higher-lift, longer-duration camshaft, and intake and ex- haust systems tuned for free breathing. Compression ratio is 9.5:1. Available with either a five- speed manual or a four-speed overdrive automatic transmission the engine op- tion includes a_ specially- calibrated four-barrel Rochester Quadrajet carb, dual-snorkel cold air induc- tion, a 2%-inch diameter ex- haust, a Corvette-type wide- mouth catalytic converter and dual 24-inch diameter tailpipes. 728s equipped with the engine carry a ‘'‘5.0-Litree H.O.”’ emblem on rocker panels behind the front wheels, on the left edge of the rear bumper, and inside on the right corner of the instru- ment panel. Another V8, coded LG4, remains available in all three Camaro models Other changes incor porated throughout’ the Camaro line in 1984 include WM gears up on - Replacement of the three- speed automatic transmission with a four-speed unit. -Introduction of a hydraulic clutch with all manual transmissions. - Introduction of GM- specified fourth-generation all-season tires (except Z28). CAMARO SPORT COUPE The addition of steel- belted tires to the sport coupe with the standard 2.5 litre L4 engine makes steel belts stan- dard throughout the Camaro lineup. The 2.8 litre V6 and 5.0 litre V8 engines are available. Now you know What is now the state of Michigan was first visited by French fur traders and missionanes in 1616.
