Pierre invited to Washington WASHINGTON — Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau has been invited to Washington in advance of the Williamsburg economic summit of western industrialized nations to discuss economic problems facing both countries. The visit was = an- nounced Monday by External Affairs Munister Allan MacEachen after more than seven hours of meetings with U.S. Secretary of State George Schultz. President Ronald Reagan is to host a series of one-day talks with leaders of six other countries before the summit in Williamsburg, Va., in tate May. MacEachen said Trudeau will be in Washington April 28. The series of talks in Washington take place against the background of a record 12.6 percent unemployment rate in Canada, triggering new political problems for the federal government. Bilingual books ‘desecration’ OTTAWA — Veterans Affairs Minister Bennet Campbell has been pressed by opposition MPs for a promise not to alter the historical Books of Remembrance of Canada to conform to the Official Languages Act. Conservative MP John McDermid said Monday changing the books — which list Canada’s war dead only in English — would be a “desecration” of history. He asked Campbell to promise the books would not be changed iota.” Campbell would only indicate it was unlikely the books would be made bilingual to conform with the languages act. “The professional opinions we have received concerning the option of altering the existing books would suggest it is not a wise course of action,” he said. rey one U.S. upgrades hot line WASHINGTON — Pentagon Tuesday “hot line” The proposed upgrading the between the leaders of the United States and the Soviet Umon and estabhshing a new direct com munications link between their two military commands to reduce the risk of nuclear war by accident or miscalculavon A report, mandated by Congress last’ year and released by Delense Secretary Caspar Weinberger, outlined a number of long-awaited measures that drew heavily from proposals made by Sen. Dean had questioned the legality of council's procedure bylaw that allowed it to reconvene for more business in public after the in-camera session, which is the last item on the agenda before adjournment. The City’s lawyers agreed with Dean that the bylaw might be inconsistent, but said that council couldn't really be said to do doing anything illegal by breaking its own procedure bylaw. During Monday's discussion, council approved a recommendation by City Administrator Ed Raymond to clean up the procedure bylaw governing in camera meetings. Raymond said that urgent matters - ones that would probably have to be decided in public the same night they are discussed in camera - would probably = include labor relations and property negotiations. In both those cases the City’s represen- tatives would have to get back to their bargaining with a new offer quickly, he said. But Mayor Jack Loucks and Alderman Frank Marcino said if the public is interested it should stick around till council comes out of the in-camera session to report. “We shouldn't have to do something extra-special to prove that we're honest,” Loucks said. Marcino, who has said several times that interested people should remain until council is finished, was opposed to a_ recom- mendation by Alderman Elko Kroon that council deal with important in camera items very early in the agenda, and then go on to the rest of the agenda. You can't expect people to stick around while council is debating im-camera, Mar- cino said. “There'll be nobody here to hear your decisions.” One member of the gallery who spoke during the policy committee debate said that he had always assumed that “when you went in-camera that that was the end of the festivities for the night.” Spring HONDA Service Spring is finally here.
