B4 - Sunday, April 3, 1983 - North Shore News [By BOBBY LENARDUZZI | If you were to summarize the characteristics of soccer players, you would say that defenders are conservative, midfielders are creative and forwards are aggressive. Perhaps too simple, but in one sense accurate. While every player must always be ready to attack, the defender must remember ‘safety first”. And it’s defending we're going to talk about. man to man defending. . If the defender can keep the other team from scoring, then he can do all the at- tacking the caoch wants. In fact, coach Johny Giles emphasizes attacking. He wants every player doing his bit to score. John believes that when we have the ball every man is an attacker and when the other team has it, then all of us defend. You must put pressure on the man with the ball. This means closing the distance between him and_= you quickly, not giving him room to manouevre. And believe me, that's easier said than done. If you run directly at a player who's coming at you, The Champ IN LAST Sunday's information on the North Shore Cross Country championships, one of the four evem winners was inad- vertently left out. Alice Woolley captured all four events in the Juvenile girls category. The photo of Alice Woolley was taken last November in Vernon when the young Hillside student finished 31st out of 250 runners at the B.C. championships in the open category. Now you know he has the possibility of beating you to either the left or the right. And if you get too close, he can easily work a give and go, or step around you. Remember when he has the bali, he knows what he's going to do before you do, which gives him the jump on you. Far better to stay at least one yard away from the ball carrier and “angle” him. Lf he’s coming down the ~\nniversary ENTRY FORM: wing, keep a 45-degree angle with him, forcing him wide. And stay with him. If you're covering a man and he suddenly passes the ball, don't follow the ball. Stay with the man. If you don’t you'll lose him and he'll be in position to receive a pass back on a give and go. And never make a tackle if you aren’t 100 per cent sure. Force the attacker to make the move. Concentrate on closing him down. You can feel foolish sliding on your backside while the man goes by because you thought you could get the ball. In 1979 when we played the New York Cosmos in the conference final, I was marking Seninho, the fast Portuguese winger. Early in the game he came down the wing with the ball and [ got tvo close to him. In a flash ; he was by me. From that \moment, I had a terrible nd ~~ game against him. I forgot all the .basics of defending. I rushed at him, attempted tackles, then stayed too far away. In short, he totally dominated me and at one point got past me and put in a cross which resulted in the Cosmos ' first goal. Fortunately we beat them and went on to play Tampa Bay Rowdies in the Soccer Bowl. I knew that Rowdies’ winger, Steve Wegerle was much like Seninho and I WITH THE CAPS knew I had to stick to the basics which I hadn't done against Seninho. It was a totally different game. fot me. I concentrated on the basics, controlled Wegerle and we won the game, and Soccer Bowl, 2-1. One last point. Good defending is learned by doing and most of your doing Is in practice. Use your practice well and you'll be well on the way to being a good player. d QUARTER CENTURY | QUARTER MARATHON DATE: Sunday April 24, the First Day of Daylight Saving.
