Rockets down Picassos in shootout

Weekend Metro hockey action

West Van Rockets
stretched their unbeaten
string to six by outlasting
North Van Picassos 9-7 in an
entertaining, free-wheeling
Metro League contest at
West Van Arena Sunday.

In a seesaw first period,
while outshooting Picassos
20-10 and leading 4-2 at the
midpoint of the stanza,
Rockets emerged on the
short end of a 5-4 score.

Bob Murphy opened
scoring for Picassos just one

minute into the game but
Rockets came right back
with Paul Pattison netting
two quick goals — the first
on a power play at 2:37 and
the second one at 4:43.

Darren Donnelly’s goal 54
seconds later evened the
score at two but by the
midway point in the period
goals by Jim Buhr and Mark
Oliver put the Rockets in the
lead again 4-2.

But then it was Picassos'’
turn. After Don Lloyd pulled

the Picassos within a goal at
the 12:44 mark, goals by
Craig Donnelly and Rick
Noble ten seconds apart
gave Picassos a 5-4 edge
heading into the’ second
penod.

And only 33 seconds into
that penod the Rockets
regained the lead with Jeff
Durrant and Danny Corrigan
adding goals just six seconds
apart.

John Bytellar evened the
score at six for Picassos

before Craig Harman added
Rockets seventh gpal and
Durrant, on the poWer play,
added what proved to be the
game winner making it 8-6 at
the end of the second.

Both teams added singles
in the final period with
Harman of the Rockets and
C. Donnelly of Picassos both
connecting with their second
goal of the game.

Rockets outshot Picassos
47-25 with Dave Warren in

goal for North Van, and
Glen Luscombe and Randy

Smith splitting the assigr
ment for West Van.
