‘Stop playing as cowboys’ Axworthy tells the west VANCOUVER (UPC) - It’s time for western Canadians to drop their gunslinger role and assume the _ respon- sibilities of nation builders, Employment and Im- migration Minister Lloyd Axworthy says. Axworthy said Monday he was “getting tired of the continuing mythology of a shootout between the federal government and the provinces.” “We (in the West) are the new nation builders and we must change our role and stop acting as cowboys,” Axworthy told a meeting of the Vancouver Men's Canadian Club. He said western Canada, with its wealth of natural resources, is now in a position to ‘“‘lead in developing solutions to the challenges now faced by our federal system.” And he urged western Canadians to reject the “favorite sport of (federal government) bashing” and make a positive contnbution ea to constitutional reform. Axworthy, one of only two Liberal MPs in the four western provinces, said Canada must have a strong central government in times of “increasing international tensions” so that the federal government doesn’t have to “go to the 10 provinces every time we take the initiative.” “We have to get away from the idea that the country can be run by a coalition of provinces,” he said. “I don't go around picking fights with the provincial premiers, but provinces have finite boundanes that hmit what they can do.” Axworthy said with “serious thinking by social, community and economic leaders in western Canada,” the West can become more industry-based and _ less resource-based “IT don't want the West to become balkanized = and (only) protect) what our short-term benefits are.” the minister said Lava dome forms in Mt.
