By EVELYN JACOB News Reporter North Vancouver School District 44 Trustee Anne Macdonald said the video, which documents 10 de- cades of education in North Van- couver (1900 to 2000), is the first one of its kind. “This has never been done be- fore,” she said, adding that thou- sands of dollars were spent putting the film together, with video pro- ducticn alone costing well over $6,000. Narrated by actor Jackson Davies and coordinated by project artistic director David Newman, the film chronicles the history of District 44, beginning with Moodyville’s first schoolhouse and ending with the construction of the new Dorothy Lynas Elementary School. Using old black and white class Photos, early footage, old memorabilia and the reminiscences of former students and school Principles, the video looks at 127 years of North Vancouver history. history now on video Viewers can walk inte a turn- of-the-century classroom complete with pot-bellied stove, wooden desks and authentic readers and end with a futuristic classroom in the year 2000. The video is based on a display installed in the Park Royal and Capilano malls last February to mark heritage and education week. The exhibit was conceived by the late Dr. Leo Marshall and realized through the efforts of District 44, numerous local business groups and volunteers. Macdonald said the goal of the film is to stimulate public awareness of the importance of education as an investment. “Not enough people know what an important job the education system is doing,”* she said. She promised the production “will be a much more valuable addition to people’s libraries than Batman and is entertaining as well.”’ Featured in the film are the drawings of West Vancouver car- toonist Len Norris and music of composer Brian Fairholm. Many of the visual displays, such as original wooden school desks, were borrowed from the North Shore Museum and Ar- chives.
