We were astounded to find that part of the decor was little lettered signs plac- ed in strategic locations warning the guests: .‘‘Please do not bring food or drink to the living room,’’. ‘‘Please do not sit on the bed,’ and “No drinks or ashtrays on the .piano.’’ We. understand that one invitation was given on.condition that the cou- _ple’s S-year-old child was not to come. _ x We would appreciate your opinion of. the advisability of 4Anstructions to guests. Needless to say,. most of. “these guests were put off, feeling their intelligence had . been insulted. I sincerely doubt that future invitations to this particular museum mi will find acceptance. ss GENTLE READER — Did manners the front closet have a sign saying, ‘‘Watch your coat — management not responsi- ble’? Did the bathroom have one advising, ‘Curb your dog'’? Surely, guests were warned that anyone at- tempting to pocket the bibelots would be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, one trust one’s guests to behave themselves. Miss Manners is thoroughly aware that some of them betray such trust, but finds that no excuse for treating them all as potential violators. She agrees that the kindest thing these people can do for their hostess is to leave her to enjoy her premises without fear. by Judith Martin Shifts take their toll From Page 31 ing fixed shifts,"? adds Jamal. . Firefighting i is another oc- _cupation that demands shift ‘work. Surprisingly, although ‘firemen constantly encounter hazardous situations, they .did’ not complain about ‘mental - and ~: physical pro- ~blems related to shifts, - Jamal says. However, their situation is unusual in many ways, he adds. Firemen usually work 12-hour shifts for four days and then have four days off. Even on work shifts,“‘If ‘there are no calls most of the firefighters can have a “snooze,’’ says Jamal. Firefighters also do a lot of socializing at the fire hall, he adds, In addition, “several firefighters even ““moonlighted’’ on days off, their extended non-work- .- shifts giving them the time to . ‘take’ other,: relatively prof- ° : iitable jobs. a _ “SHIFT CULTURE” Some people. do respond ; - “quite weil to: ‘shift ‘work. and ©: cenjoy .it. But the highest premium he discovered for ‘shift workers was a-mere five per cent. In, Europe, - particularly Great Britain, shift workers are given-premiums of about 25 per ‘cent. ‘‘Canada does accept it (rotating shifts) as a problem,'' adds Jamal. ‘‘lt must’ be recognized so high stress can be reduced.”’ Jamal also’ recommends lengthening rotation of shifts from 10.to 20 days, to give’ workers’ bodies more time to adjust to the change. In addition, more effort could be made to keep facili- ties open 24 hours for shift workers’ convenience, especially in small one-in- dustry towns where a large percentage. of the workers work studies are concen- are on shifts, he says. . trating on restaurant At present Jamal's shift employees and bus drivers.
