THIS turn of the century, fancy, dain-
ty necklace is also called a lavalier, a
style most popular around 1870 to
1990.
Usually made of gold, semi-precious stones,
pearls and diamonds, it is always of fine style, tlo-
ral, lacy and ending with a drop pendant. The
romantic Victorian iady knew hearts, flowers and
birds were meant as a token of love.
This necklace in its original velvet box was
made from 18-karat gold, in North America in
1890. The seed pearls and delicate small golden
flowers and leaf design are superb. The pendant
“has a good quality amethyst in it, a clear deep
purple stone surrounded by pearls. Amethysts
were/a fashionable favourite in the Victorian days.

_. Not too overlooked, lavaliers do occasionally
surface in antique shops. These exquisite neck-
laces can be found at reascnable prices, consider- °
ing the good craftsmanship and beauty. tts mar-
ket value is estimated at $800 to $1,000.
