10 - North Shore News — Wednesday, August 9, 2000 == MAIL Box Look at ship again, Mr. White Residents near park want fair treatment Open letter to North Vancouver City mayor and councillors: This is in response to a fet- ter by Ms. Rosemary Roberts, Westview opinions differ, North Shore News, July 19. I agree with Ms. Roberts that the 600-block of West 23rd St.. is a pleasant and unique cul-de-sac. I took a walk down her block and I think it would be a great place to live. She is lucky. _ I then walked down the ~ block that my family and I have lived on for over 16 years which is the 500-block of West 24th St. Please Ms. Roberts there is no comparison whatso- ever. You mention in your let- ter about our provincially “owned green area. Since last September 1999, it has not “been attended to and the grass has only been cut once which ~ “was on July 13. The grass was so tall that it fell over. In des- peration in early July I phoned ihe North Vancouver. City work yard: and asked if they could send someone to cut it. They were very sympathetic and "said they would send _ - someone that afternoon, but > their hands were tied. The city does not own the property so « they do not mainain it. They “only send someone over peri- odically to cut around the fire . hydrants. ..- Contrary to. what Ms. Roberts thinks, no onc is look- : ing to cash in on the possibility > of higher-density rezoning. £ * think she needs to get her facts straight before she voices her ‘opinion and the opinion of her neighbours. :-The only reason ' we: went’ before ‘council was 5 because in “early May- in. the: * North: Shore News I was “= reading the agenda for the city “counal: meeting for the next _week. To my surprise the last topic on the agenda was the: of rezoning the . possibili . provincially: owned green arca eo Known as.site two. With Paul . McKay's ‘help we contacted city hall and they instructed us how to proceed. “22 We want to be treated fairly and kept informed. We want meone.to finally take respon- sibility for the park land. If the ~- zoning is changed -from park, . the majority of neighbours in the southeast quadrant want to © be included in whatever might ~” wanspire. . “Mes, Jili Devlin and family North Vancouver | Dear Editor: In a letter in fast Wednesday’s News (July 7), our North Vancouver MP, Ted White, objects to solicit- ing federal grants to save part of the Cape Breton Victory Ship. That letter, and previ- ous statements by Mr. Whit, seem to be critical of what North Vancouver City coun- cil has dene. I feel like Pm watching two friends fight. Of course I'm loyal to the city council, the presumed target of Mr. White's com- plaints about the Cape Breton. i was a city councillor myself, once. I’m the chair of the North = Vancouver Museum and = Archives Commission. I believe the museum is obligated to serve the city and district councils and their constituents. Pve also been a Reform Party member — I’ve canvassed for Mr. White in his clection campaigns. | respect his views and would like to see any conflict resolved.” But .... some of Mr. White’s statements are mis- leading. “... the Cape Breton is not a Victory Ship,” he wrote. How can he say that? Perhaps because it had a dif- ferent name (Flamborough Head) when it was launched? Because it was launched at a satellite shipyard across the inlet? The ship really was one ef about 350) “Victory” freighters built in Canada under the wartime Emergency — Shipbuilding Program, and it was fited out at our own Burrard Drydock, here in’ North Vancouver. Burrard Drydock and its next door neighbour, . Pacific Dry Dock, built over 150 Victory ships — more than any other site in Canada. As far as I know, no ships like that remain, anywhere else in Canada. He also wrote: “... removal of the engine and asbestos should be paid for by those who will benefit from the new ‘reef?.” If they wished, the Artificial Reef Society, who own the Cape Breton, could sink the ship without removing the engine and asbestos. We asked the saciety to help us by allowing the North Vancouver muse- um to remove two valuable BCAA, ASLAM, 16.6.6. Approved “ 7AYULORM TIVE: ©/AVLORMO EK, PENNZO SUMMER SPECIALS 23:25. f. We are pleased that the society shares our desire to preserve a rare triple-expansion steam engine. That engine was very efficient. It was a pinnacle of reciprocating steam engine technology. It has a massive, dramatic sculptural form that is sure to inspire and educate visitors who see it in our waterfront museum. Why does Mr. White seem to oppose the Cape Breton project? He said that “.., lit- erally dozens of people from North Vancouver have pro- vided me with verbal and written opposition to the idea.” We on the museum and archives commission, all volunteering our time in pre- senting our proposal to the community, have had 95% positive support. Hundreds of citizens who have stopped at our shopping mall and street-side displays, on recent weekends, have voiced their approval. Many of them had either worked at the ship- yards or remembered family members or friends who had. They say they want to see a waterfront: muscum on the Burrard site. Mr. White: will vou take a “second look” at the Cape Breton? There is more to it than money. Perhaps, as chair of the museum and archives commission, I should have | 98:Fe | ATLAS “Luving Care For Your Pets Needs” briefed you on the project earlier, There may still be time. These days, it’s so easy to oppose, and protesters who shout “Stop!” are the ones who seem to win. We know we have a worthwhile pro- ject. We believe it will suc- ceed. We believe the commu- nity supports us. Mr. White, can we talk?
