BASSIST Conrad ivitsky adopts a cheeky pese. — On stage, with pale limbs flailing in the early evening light, the band layers toc-tap- ping jigs with intricate guitar tiff and sumptuous inciodies, the drums building up into a crescendo punctuated by’ ethereal vocal murmurs. “Everybody listens to lots of different kinds of music,” says Ivitsky. “You put six peo- ple on stage together, they're ound to come out with dif- ferent sorts of sounds. I don’t think you have to cate- gorize music into genres.” 1's certainly a change from the standard Celtic combos, who tend to rely largely on traditional folk meiodies and invariably segue into the patrict-pleasing notes of old standby . “Scotland the Brave.” “Oh, we play that too sometimes, when we get car-' ried away,” grins Ivitsky. The band have played Vancouver several times before, as well as performing at such events as Seactie’s Bumbershoot weekend and at Womad in the U.K. They also travel extensively on British Council-led jaunts to such far-flung destinations as Japan and Malaysia, where they represent their country without, appazendy, having to don kilts. “Ir’s a great gar- ment,” Ivitsky says, “but awfully heavy to carry.” The band accompanied British prime minister Tony Blair on This first official over- seas trip to Japan two years ago. Former punk guitarist Blair was photographed hold- ing up a copy of Shooglenifty’s most recent album Whisky Kiss, proclaim- ing to reporters that it was a “must-buy” CD. Hard to get a better endorsement than one from your own PM, although fans traipsing backstage after the show were keen to show their appreciation, West Coast-style. “I’m guessing by your dreadlocks that you might caper this,” said a tie- yed admirer, handing a lov- ingly crafted joint to 3 bentused Angus Grant. “It’s to thank you for a great show.
