tenia | Cap Community Services Society ba Tan ~ {ties 10 solve people’s problems CAPILANO COMMUNI- TY Services Society (CCSS) has come a long way from what started as a mechanism to deal with youth riots on the North Shore some 20 years ago. The society has since grown to be a valuable service to the Capilano community, providing help for the area’s youths and senior citizens, and working with the broader community to resolve common problems. This year will see a number of changes within the organization, including a new seniors program, a youth project and a number of new staff members.° “*The Seniors’ Hub,”’ a support system for seniors, has been established with a new coor- dinator, Jean Taylor. Taylor has been a voluntcer with the society since 1987 and has ex- tensive experience working with - adults and seniors.A past president of the Gerontology Association of B.C., Taylor is currently being honored in Switzerland for 25 years of work with local neighborhood associations.. : -With the help of a $17,495 fed- eral grant received last month, the Seniors’ Hub will continue to pro- vide services for handicapped and house-bound seniors with a daily Be .phone-check, transportation and a handi-man service. Dennis Humphries, chairman of Seniors’. Hub, says that with the provincial government’s push on making seniors more independent, the program will. become even more necessary. "Our target is to find and help the silent minority; home-bound seniors who fall through the cracks of service,’ said Humphries. ‘And if figures are correct that show the number of seniors over the age of 65 will rise by 60 per cent by the year 2000, the CCSS service will be sorely needed. One of the program’s priorities is to develop a North Vancouver District social centre, with a drop- _ in centre for the elderly. CCSS executive director Alice Hargreaves says without the pro- gram, seniors in Capilano would have nowhere to go.‘‘They would have to travel a long distance for this kind of service,’’ she says. Although the main focus of the CCSS’ work has been with seniors, another popular program is one that helps youths cope with the problems of today’s society. The Capilano Youth Project will be able to continue into its third year thanks to many donations from North Shore churches, youth foundations and the community. . ‘*What’s really exciting this year is that businesses and corporations are. giving money,’’ says Hargreaves. “Some of it comes in small amounts but it reaily adds up.”” About 300 kids visit the centre at one time or another each month to take part in the Peer Counselling program, a life skills workshop in which «students learn counselling strategies and go on to counsel their: peers~ in schools and the community. “It’s a unique program. It offers everything they (youths) need,’ says Hargreaves. She adds that some of the kids are now beginn- ing to get involved in fund-raising efforts: for the program, such as car washes and bake sales. Terry Bulych, the program’s new-youth worker, says: some of her main goals this year are help- ing to: integrate kids to become “more socially mainstreamed.”’ “Right now they’re on the fringe — they > don’t know what's available if they get into trouble,”’ says Bulych. One way the community can contribute to the society is through a giant parking lot sale on June 4 at the Delbrook Community Cen- tre. See: Socicty Page 21 TIRED OF SORE & BURNING FEET?
