Bowen swim in 11 hours

LAs Debble, their son Stephen and escort
boat pilot Cameron Calter bobbed a good 80
metres (164 feet) away from Collins during
this stretch, unable to bring him food for fear
of crashing into fim at the hands of the rough
seas, Collins hunkered down mentally and
focused on the task at hand,

“i'm sitting there, wearing, to mysell say
ing, ‘Whar the hell am T doing out here?
A ain!’ ”, Collins recalled, “Twas asking myself,

Rut then a fair wind blew for the old British
Navy man, and a steady breeze, “right over my
shoulder,” pushed Collins tow: ards the island at
just the right approach, Because of this, “the
ast third of the swim was the fastest.”

Almost 11, hours after setting foot in the
swell at Bowen Island's Cates Beach, Collins
was back on terra firma, well-spent but happy
he made his mark on local history.

One thing that's out of her hands is the
weather, but the Collinses have about a one-
week window to get Debbie in the water, Buth
Shane and their son Stephen will be in the crew
boat for Debbie's Channel swim,
