OHN Leith likes Horseshoe Bay
because it is a far-out place for far
out people.
In case you haven't guessed, Leith
moved there in 1969.

Leith is a butcher who has been mar-
ried to Muriel for 39 years, They have no
children, but have one “wonderful” dog
Samantha the couple got from the SPCA.

Samantha, “a Border Collie and back
alley cross,” is a senior citizen too, points
out Leith, The dog is 12 years
old.

Leith moved from Ontario
to B.C. in 1965. He first set
eyes on the western edge of
West Vancouver a short time
later while a part-time student at a brand
new university called SFU.

The first people Leith met in Horseshoe
Bay were the late Joe Troll and Tommy
Sewell.

They sold him on the place.

Leith rented a cabin on Argyle Street
from George and June Spooner. The
Spooners owned several summer cabins.

“Eventually [ bought all those cabins
and we were the landlords of many many
people in Horseshoe Bay,” said Leith.

The Argyle cottages are gone now and
duplexes have taken their places.

On the work front, Leith enjoys being a

butcher at the Caulfeild Safeway store. He
likes to call himself the “Dean of the
Michelangelo College of Meat Cutters.”

“We are a slice above the rest, every-
bedy gets their cut and we make no bones
about. it,” he said.

“That's one of my originals believe it or
not.”

Leith said you can tell if someone is
from Horseshee Bay because he or she
will be extremely friendly and “not care

Leith said he couldn't come up with
anything negative that, has happened to
Horseshoe Bay over the years as it would
go against his motto, “Never look back-
wards unless you want to go that way.”

Leith said he is happy about new fami-
lies again starting to put down roots in
Horseshoe Bay in recent years,

He plans to make them as welcome as
he was in the community.

“Our main secret in life is our friends,”
said Leith.
