SC trustee race By Deana Lancaster Contributing Writer WEST Vancouver school trustee hopefuls and incumbents were full of praise for cach other at an all-candi- dates mecting on Tuesday night. “[ think the present school board has done an excellent job,” said James Keen, who at 72 is the oldest of the nine candidates vying for the five spots on the school board. The other — candidates agreed with nim. “School District 45 is the envy of every school district in the province,” long-time trustee Jean Ferguson told the smali audience. There were only about 20 listeners sparse- ly seated on one side of Sentinel secondary’s gym. In the past three years the West Vancouver school board has run a surplus on its bud- get, opened Rockridge middle school, and was a leading voice in the successful fight against amalgamation with School District 44, a battle that incumbent Clive Bird said he remembered “with horror.” The promises made on Tuesday were not about change, they were about con- tinued success. Some debate did arise about technology. She also wanted to know if the parents would always be expected to raise funds for the necessary equip- ment. “Should parents have to raise funds to provide their children with the latest tech- nology? No, they shouldn't,” incumbent Ken Hayeock said. But, he said he thought fundraising by parents would always be necessary to provide West Vancouver's students with the best equipment avail- able. He also told the audience that he thought it was impor- tant students learn how to process and use the informa. tion, “not just pull it on toa screen, “Are we using technology to enhance fearning, or is it just technology for technolo- gy’s sake?” Haycock said. Most of the candidates were strongly in favor of a comprehensive sex education program. Pointing to the growing global population, Keen said, “That has a little bit todo with sex, | think.” But some of the nine can- didates were uncomfortable, Gr in some cases, evasive, answering whether they thought condoms should be made available to students. Dr. Erica Bell-Lowther and Hayeock said they thought it should be a school-based deci- sion, while Ferguson said she would want to hear what the community thought.
