IT’S NICE to share. 1 learned
that in Kindergarten and I
still subscribe to the idea —
especially when I’m driving.

- Armed with skill and its frustra-
tions, and basic common courtesy,
share the road so as to ensure a
smooth and safe traffic flow.

When turing right, signal, slow
down and move your vehicle as far.
‘to the right as reasonably possible
before tuming. By moving over you
are freeing-up much of the lane for
other drivers who wish to go straight
and at full speed.

Likewise, it is both courteous and
lawful to keep your vehicle as far to
the left as possible before making 3
left turn. Keep you car close to the

center-line and free-up that space on
the right so others can squeeze past
you, where possible, and carry on
their merry way.

“But Shaun!" you protest, “Now
you are encouraging people to pass
on the right and we all know that's
illegal!” Really?

Actually, the almighty Act
addresses this problem specifically.
Section 160(1) states: ‘The driver of
a vehicle shall not cause or pennit
the vehicle to over take and pass on
the right of another vehicle, except
(a) when the vehicle overtaken is
making a left tum or it’s driver has
signaled his intention to make a left
tum.”

It goes on to exempt two or more
Janes and really wide roads traveling
in one direction.

I know for a fact that bus drivers
are very frustrated by this left-tum
circumstance; they are passed on
the right often and in spite of the fact
that their busses have obstructed al!
possible views for the drivers doing
the passing.

Sometimes this makes for an
exceptionally unsafe situation.

Fortunately, the Act goes on to
re-restrict passing on the right
“when the movement cannot be
made safely.” (Section 160(2)(b) of
the MVA).

This is commen sense, of course,
but it is in there just in Case you
have none.

If you do pass a bus on the right,
slow right down and be extremely -
cautious. Watch ‘for cars turning into
your lane from the left which cannot
be seen until the last moment
because of the aforementioned bus.

Watch for pedestrians, obviously,
that may also be temporarily
biocked from view.

Waiting for the vehicle in front
of you to tum off may be your best
bet. Look ahead and see if there is a
break in the on-coming traffic
through which a left-turner may go
sometime soon. Be patient.

Finally, 1 should mention anoth-
er safe driving practice which I
omitted earlier — in fact, I should
dedicate an entire column to this
one: When making a right tum,
before moving over to the right part
of the road, check your right blind-
spot for cyclists! Even if you're
sure none are there.

Cyclist have been known to

cle (although I have heard that
some bicycle couriers will merely
crawl out from undemeath your car
and beat you up).
