The picture among U.S. practi- tioners wasn't much brighter. Harvard's Graduate School of Design News ran an essay warning of the day when “every fourth cab dri- ver in our urban centres will hold an accredited degree in architecture.” But if the growing success of John and Patricia Patkau is any indi- cation, things must be looking up. The West Vancouver couple, who wrapped up a [0-year retrospective last month at Toronto's Design Exchange, has been turing out some of the best work this country has seen in years. Buildings like the Seabird Island School in Aggasiz. the Barnes House, the Newton Library in Surrey and the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery in Kitchener, Ont. — the couple's first commission in Eastem Canada — have been garnering worldwide attention. And so it came as no surprise when the former Winnipeggers were chosen to represent Canada at the prestigious Venice Biennale International Exhibition of Architecture. For his part, however, John Patkau sounds almost demure when sizing up the accomplishment. “For whatever reason. they (the advisory committee put together by the federal government and the Canadian Centre for Architecture) selected us.” he says. sounding a ti- fle bemused. When pressed Patkau offers this theory: “I guess I can speculate why, Our work has been recognized both nationally and internationally for a decade now as some of the most interesting work going on in the country.” See Patkaus page 23 } nen strategies Help change attitudes toward nutrition and exere manage behaviour and stress.
