North Shore clubs dominate Premier Cup finals

FOR THE first time in recent
memory, both Premier Cup
provincial under-19 soccer
champions are from the North
Shore.

The North Shore Amazons
defeated sweltering heat and the
Kamloops Seiects jast weekend by
a score of 3-2 in the Provincial
Premier Cup final at Hugh Boyd
Field in Richmond. The victory
qualified the women’s squad for
the National Club Championships
in Halifax at Thanksgiving.

Amazon scoring came from the
talented feet of Leanne Byrom,
Andrea Stamatakis and Lyanne
Westie. The team is coached by
Tom Byrom,

The following day. the North
Shore Selecis, an under-19 boys’
team, won their own battle with the
Heat (literally), as they dropped the

Kamloops Heat in their under-!9
Premier Cup final 2-!. The Selects,
coached by Gunther Frey, will
also represent British Columbia in
Halifax this fall.

Setterley scored for the Selects.

In other North Shore team
action at the provincials last week-
end, the under-19 West
Vancouver Superstars lost a

heartbreaking overtime game, 4-3,
to the Vernon Selects in the
provincial Challenge Cup girls’
final.

The fourth North Shore team
that competed at the provincial
level experienced the same fate.
The North Shore Phantoms
under-12 girls club was blanked 4-
O by the hard-charging Kelowna
Roadrunners.

Wrestlers win awards

TWO NORTH Shore wrestlers
were among the athletes who
pinned down awards at the annual
B.C. Wrestling Awards.

Carson Graham wrestler
Angela Lacy was named Junior
Female wrestler of the year, while
Baimoral’s Audrey Yap picked up
the Cadet Female honor.

Lacy defeated Yap in the 55 kg
final at this year’s British Columbia
Wrestling Championships in

Victoria. The Carson Graham stu-
dent also placed an impressive third
in an international! field at the
Sunkist Open.

Yap capped her best season ever
with a first place showing at the
1994 Canadian National Champi-
onships in Edmonton earlier this
year.After her loss to Lacy in the
high school finals, the Balmoral
student has beaten every opponent
she has faced.
