cote D Vie oe Ol oie eneration 20 3 NEXT WEEK, 40 young people will begin a 15-week national tour across Canada to talk to teenagers about issues relevant to them. The group is called Generation 2000. He came to the conclusion that younger people were not properly represented in the constitutional process and that this indicated a lack of youth involvement in many important issues in Canada. Barnard established Generation 2000 in order to promote the idea of youths assuming an active rote «qin deciding the future for themselves in Canada. It was designed to encourage com- munication between youths and to motivate positive action towards the problems they face. Teenagers are most likely to want to talk to people who they feel can relate to them and their issues. Issues for teens change over the years; therefore, it is significant that the tour members are between the ages of 18 and 25, so that the concerns raised are not totally foreign to them. Most young people have many concerns about their future, whether it be employment, educa- tion, sex, racism, drug and alcohol » By Margaret Bryant » ZAP! The organization was estab- lished in 1993 when the Spicer Commission conducted a consti- tutional hearing across Canada. Twenty-three-year-old Robert Barnard attended a hearing in Toronto and was surprised to find that he was the only participant under 35 years old. {| Combine errands instead of using the car several times a day, plan trips to reduce vehicle use. After graduating from second- ary school in West Vancouver, Toppings went on to the Univer- sity of Owlawa, where he recently graduated with a degree in Politi- cal Science. After a brief visit home, he joined the Generation 2000 team back east. Toppings said Generation 2000's goal is ‘‘to get young people out of the realm of just talking about issues and concerns and to en- courage them to go through the neat motions and to be able to put together a project to achieve a final goal.’’ The tour will begin on Feb. 7 in B.C. The team members will then be split up into groups of four and will travel to high schools and community centres all over the province, including some North Shore stops. The team will be in B.C. until Feb. 12, 1994, when they move on to another province. For more information about Generation 2000 and to find out when they will be in this area cail 1-800-565-5847.
