Diners of an adventurous bent, diners who prefer smaller dishes, ‘diners who prefer lots of smaller dishes, or diners who prefer sopp- ing up sauces and slathering on condiments with hearty chunks of bread can put together a table- load of side orders, soups, salads, pan-fried this and finely diced that to satisly hungers diverse and deep. Table Hopping, for example, opened with Bay Moorings’ im- pressive Baby Cioppino. . The great San Franciscan seafood stew came plugged with fresh mussels, clams, prawns and ced fish. Its broth was a sturdy seafood stock bolstered with tomatoes, white wine, herbs and basil oil. The restaurant’s warm home- baked foccacia bread — another pleasant surprise — helped sop up what could not be dispatched with spoon and fingers. We also enjoyed Bay Moorings’ Taramasalata, a traditional Greek puree of red caviar, lemon, olive oil and garlic that is more tangy than homus, its more universally Mooorings popular chickpea puree cousin. ’ Like most other dishes served at ‘Bay Moorings, Taramasalata comes with a generous stack of hot-buttered pita bread. The other dishes we sampled were also very good. Our prawns were sauteed ina herbed cream and garlic sauce, and the evening's special Calabresse Salad featured Ro- maine lettuce topped with strips of fresh snow crab, baked navy beans and a raspberry vinaigrette. Bay Moorings is a large restau- rant. It has about 125 seats inside and another 80 on its long, open sundeck, Despite its size, however, ser- vice is fast and the large team of waiters is polite and obliging. Proprietor Kostas Tsegas has presided over the restaurant's operation for the past 14 years with the help of his wife and two sens. His fist of customers is long and loyal. There is a strong feeling of family and informality about the Moor- ings, especially when the evening sun ts shining upon your face out on the restaurant’s second-storey sundeck, a gentle ocean breeze is rippling the deck umbrellas and a rack of lamb is being barbecued on the restaurant’s outdoor grill.
