20 - Wecnesday. Nov 25, 1992 - Nortn Shore News re SPORTS Grey Cup hoopla hides hard reality from CFL BETWEEN NOW and Sunday's 3:30 (Pacific time) kick- off of the SOth Grey Cup game from Toronto’s SkyDome, there will be an increase in loudness and intensity from those Canadian Football League purists dead-set against the CFL expanding into U.S. markets. Peering fram behind the blinkers they’ve been wearing for decades. the message will go something like this: ‘Flutie vs. Dunigan, the top two quarter- backs in the land; the best from the West vs. the best from the East...the way it should be! This great Canadian tradition lives on!" Great, indeed, if you don’t happen to own one of the existing eight CFL franchises that loses gigantic sacks of money year after year after year. CEC Television, celebrating 40 years of Grey Cup coverage dating back to Nov. 29, 1952, will most assuredly make Sunday’s pres- entation appear as though the CFL doesn’t have a worry in the wortd. The SkyDome will be filled with primarily corporate citizens capable of writing off their $100 tickets and booze hills from their luxury suites. Anew “WC TV, in the ensuing weeks, w.i:'n be proudly announcing re- cord-breaking viewership figures. But what will be lost in all of this hoopla is the reality that hangs over the CFL: there isn't a franchise in the league that stands financially independent, and the Greg Douglas new breed of owners are convine- ed expansion remains the only an- swer. Where does it say that the Bruce McNalls (Toronto), Lonie Gleidermans (Ottawa), Bill Com- ries (B.C.) and Larry Ryckman (Calgary) should be swailowing multi-million-doltiar setbacks cach year to keep the purists pleased by maintaining this ‘‘great Canadian tradition.”’ It’s poppycock. NORTH SHORE REPLAY 40 YEARS AGO Posting their third consecutive shutout victory with a 15-0 win over Burnaby, the North Shore Lions finished the 1952 regular season of the Juvenile Canadian football league in second place overall. . 30 YEARS AGO Hillside Mountaineers, marking their first appearance at the North . Shore school Inter-City annual junior basketball jamboree, soundly defeated St. Thomas Aquinas 103-67 in the final of the 10-ream tournament. 25 YEARS AGO Hamilion Hi-Liters won both the juvenile and bantam North Shore high school girls’ grass hockey ti- tles, capping undefeated seasons for both squads. Both ieams, coached by D. Irwin, were playing their first season of grass hockey. 20 YEARS AGO The North West Eagles boxing club dominated the 1972 Bronze Glove boxing iournament. The Eagles — coached by FEllio, Met and Leo Tus won the team championstiip, giving them eight provincial team tides in the last nine years. 10 YEAKS AGO Sentinel led a North Shore sweep at the Vancouver & District senior tennis championships. Behind the Spartans championship finish were second piace Hillside and third place Handsworth. The junior Spartans gave Sentine! overall bragging sights when they won the junior team title. Like every olher professional sports league in eNistence, the mandate is to make money. Or at leust enjoy the ego being fed by breaking even. Some stoop on the radio Mon- day morning questioned the fact that Ryckman was allowed to patrol the sidelines during the Stampeders’ western final win over Edmonton. Imagine that? Ryckman owns the team. He pays the salaries, which means he pays the debts. That entitles him to bungee jump off the roof of Discontinued models, freight damaged models, floor models Sale prices at wholesale or mfg. cost. All sizes of the stadium if it would make him happy. Its OK for Cal Murphy, bless him, to continue his crusade to block the CFL’s proposed move- ment into the U.S, But the fact of the mauer is, the Blue Bombers are one of four remaining community-owned franchises, and it isn’t his money that’s on the line. Saskatchewan, Edmonton and Hamilton are the other three...and each of them operates on a shoe- string budget. Each one of them scrambles every year to survive. > WEEKEND: tables 8',9',10" & 12”, Solid Giese oak and mahogany tabdies a SAVINGS OF $1,000 Laminate tables for basement or Rec. Room. Three ‘tno’ votes on the ex- pansion issue will scuttle the mis- sion currently being promoted by Seague commissioner Larry Smith. Winnipeg has already declared itself. Should the Bombers be suc- cessful in their lobbying efforts to acquire two more negative votes, the CFL will continue to suck along as a losing proposition. Sat. Nov. 28/92 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM Sun.
