Ais Sen Municipalities plan activities geared for kids 12-year-olds that promote lots of wave action at the new wave pool. THIS SUMMER the North Shore will be alive with com- munity events and activities for families. But some of the ongoing recreation is planned just for kids. Throughout both the city and the district of North Vancouver, the recreation centres will be holding activities and day camps that vary from visits to local sites of interest to the exploration of different cultures to participation in sporting challenges. In West Vancouver, two not- to-be-missed activities are the Arts in Action for Kids, and the Creative Kids Day at the Har- mony Arts Festival. West Vancouver John Lawson Park is the place to be every Saturday this summer. At 10:30 a.m. every week in Ju- ly and August, the park will be the site of Arts in Action for Kids. This is drop-in Saturday morn- ing fun in which participants can get involved in a variety of crafts including fish printing, mask mak- ing, story telling and face paint- ing. In case of rain, Arts in Action will be held at the Silk Purse, 1570 Argyle Ave. The Harmony Arts Festival in August will be a great family event, but Saturday, August 15 is Creative Kids Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., when all the activities will be aimed at the younger crowd. Musical entertainment, clowns, dancing and games are planned, and lots of friendly volunteers will be waiting to help make crafty creations at the craft stations. The Harmony Arts Festival features the best artists on the North Shore, and the Creative Kids Day offers a chance for the North Shore’s future artists to go atit. North Vancouver @ recCentre Andrews is focusing on going places with World of Faces for six- to 12-year-old boys and girls and World Adventure Camps, held week days from 8:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. The World of Faces camps will offer a new topic every week, Starting Monday, June 29 and running until Friday, Sept. 4. Ac- tivities will include trips to Science World, the Planetarium, Bowen island, Grouse Mountain, Maplewood Farm, and the Van- couver Art Gallery. As a special treat, two Moonlight Adventures overnight camping trips will also be held this summer. The World Adventure Camps are focusing on the cultures of other lands, including Australia, Japan, Africa, and Spain. These program topics also change weekly, and the camps run from Monday, June 29 to Friday, Aug. 28. @ recCentre Delbrook is hosting the Fourth Annual North Van- couver Tennis Festival and Recre- ational Tournament from Mon- day, June 8 to Sunday, June 14. Included in the events are games for boys and girls from beginners to advanced players. Kids will play singles and doubles, and ac- cording to their ages and ability levels. A free indoor Kid’s Tennis tournament will be held Wednes- day, June 10. @ recCentre Griffin is presenting three programs this summer every weekday from 8:45 a.m. to.4:15 p.m. Griffin Island (for five- to seven-yéar-olds) takes a loony toons approach running weekly programs under such themes as Peter Pan and the Pirates, Huckleberry Hound, and Ducktales. These programs run from Monday, June 29 to Friday, Sept. 4. Pump up the Summer, for six- to 12-year-olds, promises loads of fun and lots of variety the whole summer long. Beach volleyball, ethnic cooking, and undercover spying are among the topics to be found at day camps running from Monday, June 29 to Friday, Sept. 4, Penny Lane, for 10 to 14 year olds, offers adventure, explora- tion, sports, and crafts, as well as outings to see the sites of Greater Vancouver.
