8 - Wednesday, October 2, 1891 - North Shore News CRIC rules are well-defined Dear Editor: On Sept. 15 your News View- point writer suggested ‘‘the CRTC struck a sour note indeed.’ This opinion is based upon the recent CRTC decision that Bryan Adams’ lfatest album does not meet Canadian content criteria. The writer feels the decision is ‘a ridiculous slap in the face to the man who put Vancouver on the international rock music map."* Whoever wrote this view- point is either misinformed or choosing to misunderstand the Canadian content regulations. The purpose of the CRTC’s regulation is quite clear: to enable Canadian artists to receive recog- nition in the form of radio or television airplay by forcing pro- grammers to program a certain percentage of Canadian material. This material must meet well- defined criteria. There is little doubt in any Ca- nadian’s mind (or any patriot’s, for that matter) that Bryan Adams is Canadian. He is, without doubt, a ‘‘local musician (made good).** He does not, however, need a federal broadcast regula- tion to ensure he gets heard on the radio. Many, many ‘‘up and com- ing’* Canadian musicians do! The writer of this article seems antagonistic toward the regulation that Bryan Adams used to his ad- vantage prior to ‘‘superstardom.”’ Now that Bryan Adams has gain- ed international musical recogni- tion, perhaps the same opportuni- ty should be extended to our other Canadian musicians (and there are many) who have not yet had the chance to put Canada on the in- ternational music map. This was not an insuit to Bryan Adams, it was a victory for all Canadian musicians who have not yet enjoyed unlimited airplay for the past 10 years. Kimberley Dariing North Vancouver Deep Cove residents say thanks Dear Editor: The residents of 2069 through “2171 Deep Cove Road, North Vancouver, would like to take this opportunity to thank the News for its most effective article on our situation in the March 3 edition, regarding the work deficiencies on the Dollarten Highway/Deep Cove Road project. Our front yard situation has been resolved and we are extreme- ly pleased with the results. The slope has been reduced and thus the hazard that existed. Following the article in the North Shore News, as well as Ict- ters sent to then Minister of Highways, Rita Johnston, we were contacted by the ministry involvea and worked with them to develop a solution with which we are all very satisfied. We believe the rock wail in front of our block has been a pos- itive addition to the community. Mr. & Mrs. BR. Evans Mr. & Mirs. J. Nelson My. & Mrs. J. McWha Mr. & Mrs. R. McLeod Taxpayer always pays Dear Editor: In his otherwise excellent piece Sept. 15 on government priorities at three levels, Mr. Donald M. Currie makes one small, but significant, mistake. He states that customs duties, port fees, etc. do not come from the taxpayer’s pocket perhaps because, in the firs’ instance, the bulk of such payrnents are made by corporations. Any payment made by a corporation is part of the cost of doing business and thus part of the selling cost; the taxpayer always pays. M.E. Blanchard West Vancouver Do we need this incompetent body’? Dear Editor: 1 applaud most strongly the views expressed in your Sept. 15 News Viewpoint concernir.: the CRTC’s mystifying ruling on Bryan Adams’ new album. Many U.S. performers whose records contain minimal Canadian content have received the CRTC’s cachet of approval as “Canadian."’ If this is the way this august bady feels it RTH SHORE SK AILBOARD t can protect Canadian culture, they are sure to fail. The way to succeed is to do everything possible to en- courage a standard of ex- cellence which can take care of itself. Like many others, i wonder if we need this capricious and, to ail appear- ances, incompetent body. If the Brian H.
