Flag football Broncos ride over Fosters TUGGS BRONCOS were crowned North Shore Flag Football league champions Sunday after defeating the regular season first-place team, Fosters 27-7 at Inter-River Park in North Vancouver. The Broncos advanced to the finals by earlier defeating the Jack Lonsdale Raiders 26-12 while the Raiders defeated Pacific Pac 26-20 on Saturday to advance against the Broncos. Broncos quarterback Steve Wilcox gave Tuggs a quick 7-0 lead in the first. Although Fosters marched the ball to the Broncos eight- yard line, Wilcox bat the ball into the air for an interception. The turnover was converted into a touchdown shortly after for an in- surmountable 13-9 lead. The Fosters shortcoming was their inability to put the ball in the end zone from in close, as they had five opportunities to score from inside the 20-yard line but were unable to covert once. Fosters only touchdown was on a 40-yard pass and run play from Dave Pearce to Nathan Johnson, Doug Cottrel had a strong game from his offensive centre position for the Broncos as did defensive lineman Doug Pitman and wide receiver Eric Hansen. Johiw McNicol was a standout on defence for Fosters, hauling in three interceptions. Seeded one and two respectively, Broncos and Fosters advance to the B.C. Flag Football Championships held this Saturday and Sun- day in Courtenay. 1 CLEAN AND ADJUST BRAKES 50 PT. By Guido Marziali Contributing Writer The UBC doctors lost no time on Blues striker Shane Carphin, gashed above the right eve while playing ar UBC in Sunday's league final. Carphin returned in the second half to rally a doubting side and to lead, with MVP Mat Humphries, the Blues to a 3-1 comeback victory over the Fraser Valley College Cascades. During the regular season, the first-place Cascades thrived on a cautious counterattacking strategy. In the final, Blues coach Joe facobellis assigned talented sweeper Leone Corra to a safety role, telling him to ‘*make sure you collect all the through balls,” which Corra did surprisingly well at. However, just before half time, he got caught in midfield, and CAPILANO COLLEGE SPORTS huge Cascade forward Shawn fverson lumbered into the box on a two-on-one, Blues keeper Jason Maros just got his hand on Iver- son’s blast, but Cascade's Shane Mummery walked into the te- bound for an easy goal. At half time, the Blues were faced with the discoureging fact that although they'd played mosi- ly in the Caseade half, they were trailing 1-0. But Carphin's return to the zume revitialized the ailing team. At the 60° mark, a punt by Maros was redirected to the top left of the box, where Humphries picked it up and moved in. His shat at close range was deflected by the keeper, but still found the net for the equalizer. Ten minutes jater, Carphin ex- ploited a defensive lapse to put the Blues ahead 2-. The Cascades pressed but were punished with their weapon of choice, the counterattack, as Humphries add- ed an insurance goal. on — ~_ Ae An Invitation The North Shore Family Services Society invites you and your family to attend our fundraiser, the Fifth Annual Winter Family Ball Cascades coach Scott Fast took the Joss in stride, calling the result “avery fair outcome...
