Run and fight against crime JOIN THE fight against crime this Sunday by participating in the North Vancouver RCMP Fun Run. This annual event, the kickoff for National Police Week, consists of a 10-kilometre run and a three-kilometre walk. Last year’s event exceeded expectations and saw 800 participants. Proceeds from the run, which wil) take entrants through North Vancouver’s central Lonsdale business area and nearby residen- tial neighborhoods, will go to the non-profit Greater Vancouver Crime Stoppers Program. Crime Stoppers pays up to $2,000 per case for information leading to the arrest and charge of @ person committing a criminal of- fence. In excess of $100,000 has been paid out to tipsters since the pro- gram’s inception in January 1985. Crime Stoppers’ statistics show more than 1,000 arrests have been made since 1985. Anyone with in- formation on a criminet offence is urged to call the Crime Stoppers line at 669-TIPS. The North Vancouver run starts at 8:30a.m. Sunday, May 13. Start and finish of the event will be at recCentre Lonsdale at 23rd and Lonsdale. The event is open to all ages. T- shirts will go to all entrants with spot prizes also awarded. Schools raise Olympic funds THREE NORTH Shore schools competed in the provincial finals of the Olympics of the Mind com- petition held April 28 at New Westminister Secondary School. Four teams from Blueridge Elementary, three teams from Pauline Johnson Elementary and one team from Ross Road Elemen- tary competed with more than 90 other teams, Two teams from North Van- couver’s Blueridge and one team from Pauline Johnson, in West Vancouver, won the right to attend world finals at Iowa State Univer- sity from May 3} to June 2. Olympics of the Mind is an in- ternational contest that poses mind-bending problems for children to solve. The competition sharpens the power of creative thinking. To raise money for the Blueridge teams to attend, students and parents will be holding a garage sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, at Blueridge Elementary School, 2650 Bronte, in North Vancouver. Tax deductible donations to help pay for the teams’ travel expenses may be made through the North Vancouver Schoo!
