8 - Friday, January 5, 1990 - North Shore News MLAILBOx Concerns raised over sun girls Dear Editor: Over the past months [ have become increasingly concerned with the Sunshine Girl and the reasons why these young women have allowed themselves to be used in this way. It is disturbing to me _ that women continue to be viewed as sex objects and I regret that young and attractive women feel being a Sunshine Girl is an appropriate way of announcing their significance as fernales. As a nurse 1 am even more disturbed that of late some of these young women have expressed a desire to be or already were nurs- ing students. f wonder at the im- pact this has on the profession of nursing and the public perception of nurses. Thousands of female nurses are working valiantly to overcome (among numerous other obstacles) a stereotypical view of (a) women and (b) female nurses which is only encouraged by these young women feeling compelled to subject themselves to this exposure. I can only hope that in future women considering this experience appraise the effect they will have on women in general and on the profession of nursing in particular. Marsha Unheiin North Vancouver Article opened eyes Dear Editor: I have recently read the article titled Christmas not always a treat for single moms in the Dec. 10 issue. I enjoyed this articie as it br- ings to light the need to care for our fellow citizens in our own community. I phoned the North Vancouver Christmas Bureau and was happy to hear that most families that ap- ‘CG plied for heip this Christmas were assisted. I. was also encouraging to see iors! toys and food drop-off bins fr il of donated goods. Your article made the public aware of the North Shore needy, and should be commended for br- inging this worthy cause to our at- tention. Mark Campbell North Vancouver ANNOUNCES 1990 EXECUTIVE R.W.
