Dundarave recently received a $20,000 renewable facade im- provement grant froin Rita Johnston, provincial minister of Municipal Affairs, and plans are now underway to form a ‘‘business improvement area’’ for the development of promotional activ- ities. “The idea is to keep revitaliza- tion going — keep it alive,’ Bob Heaslip of the West Vancouver District Planning Department said Monday. A petition will be circulated among Dundarave merchants for the creation of the bylaw for the business improvement area. The merchants will be assessed for their contributions to a kitty, which will be managed by the municipality on their behalf. ‘“‘The same people who spearheaded revitalization will be likely to want to continue with this,’’ said Heaslip, Horseshoe Bay did not create a business improvement area follow- ing its revitalization, and Heaslip foresees difficulty in forming one in a revitalization area as large as Ambleside. “In order to successfully com- pete against the malls, the area has to have an identity — Dundarave has that,’’ said Heaslip. Similar programs in Ontario and the U.S. have proved highly suc- cessful, according to Heaslip. The $20,000 facade improve- ment grant is available on a for- mula basis to merchants who undertake their own revitalization work. Interested business owners must take before and after pictures and undertake the renovations themselves. They can then apply By MAUREEN CURTIS Contributing Writer for a grant covering a percentage of the cost. Capers, Stongs and the Capilano West Restaurant are some of the businesses planning facade im- provements that could fall under the grant category. There is no particular theme that must be adhered to in Dundarave, but improvements must follow cer- tain guidelines that were set up with the revitalization program, “We're looking at in- dividualism, but with common elements,’’ said Heaslip. An interesting future develop- ment in Dundarave is a two-storey commercial complex being planned for the north-east corner of 25th Street and Marine Drive. The rezoning should be coming for- ward in Septenber with a public hearing planned, most likely, for October. The building will offer extra parking in the back, as well as rear-facing retail outlets.
