The job action is a moderate and reasoned response to a most vindictive and unfair legislative package. Bill 20, among other things, destroys the coopera- tive structure that is the foundation of effective schools, and threatens to undermine the influence| of the B.C. Teachers Federation. The BCTF has stood as a strong advocate for the welfare of students and the professional and economic interests of teachers for nearly 70 years. I ” Bill 19 overturns a half century of progress in labor Telations and threatens ‘to create unprecedented disharmony in the workplaces throughout this pro- vince. The teachers of this province wil! not silently | ; Dear ‘Editor: . We do not have a suite, ‘in, our home, illegal .or otherwise, but. 1 feel. for those who do and who are counting on the small income received to help with mortgages or just to help live a little better — most important ‘just to keep their .homes. Widows not yet eligible for an old age pension need the added in- come.. It is also'a way for them to have someone else i in the home ‘for security. It is very easy. for. elected’ of- : ficials to forget that most people: have no way, of raising their .in- ‘come by voting themselves a raise in pay. ! In my opinion, we are getting more , useless regulations all the time — e.g. no burning in the district (where does the North Vancouver City smoke - go?) Developers are allowed huge fires -with no thought of the ash and smoke that covers homeowners’ lawns, pools and homes. Evelyn Donovan North Vancouver i accept the enactment of such regressive and repressive legislation. . The teachers of West Vancouver are unable to par- ticipate in the provincial instruction-only campaign due to a clause in its teaching and working conditions agreement. No other district association has such a contractual obligation to perform extra-curricular ac- tivities. The contract was bargained in good faith and con- tains many provisions of benefit to teachers in this community. Were it not for this contractual obliga- tion, West Vancouver teachers would be allied in ac- tion, as well as in spirit, with our colleagues throughout the province. The West Vancouver Teachers Association will par- ticipate fully in the effort to educate the public about the potentially destructive impact of bills 19 and 20 on the public school system.
