1985/86 bring another
epidemic of disabled cars
when the therrnometer dips
toward zero?

Perhaps so. When asked,
“Right now, does your vehi-
cle need a tune-up?’ (e.g.
engine hard-to start, runs
poorly, stalls, uses more gas
than usual, etc.), in a na-
tional survey by the Car
Care Council, one out of
four respondents said they
thought their cars needed to
be tuned up. Another 14 per
cent said they thought their
cars might need tuning up.

“With the average car
now 7,5 years old (compared
to 5.7 years just ten years
ago) and with decreasing at-
tention being paid to preven-
tive maintenance, it becomes
clear that ‘Murphy’s Law’
will prevail,”’ said the Car
Care Council of the
Automotive Industries

of auto club inspection pro-
grams, the Council said,
“The ‘majority of vehicles

One auto club reported that,
among 1,650 vehicles tested
in one program, four cars
out of five were not
operating at peak engine ef-

ficiency. The one-year study
revealed that 89 per cent had
ignition system problems re-
quiring such things as spark
plugs, timing adjustments or
plug wires; 40 per cent of the
vehicles had loose or cor-
