riage.

But, if women are looked.
after better by the govern-"
ment schemes, the record
for private pension plans. is
not so good.

Coxe said the overwhelm-
ing majority of private pen-
sion plans don’t provide for
any survivor benefits, mean-
ing a wife has no pension
whatever if her husband dies
before retirement age;
although she will receive his
accumulated pension contri-
butions plus interest in a

‘stant rise in the cost of living
caused by spiralling infla-
tion, |

Because women “tend to
live longer, they suffer the
ravages. of inflation longer,
too. They. really-are the ones
who lose the most.

“But the biggest problem
‘is women.don't: realize that
the money: being ‘built-up in
private pension plans at their
husband's place of work may
not protect them. Nobody
tells them this,” Coxe said.

He went on to say that in a
lot of private plans, uniess
you make early provision for
it — usually five years —
long before you retire — the
pension benefits will apply
only to the life of the hus-
band.
