Dear Editor: Responding to your headlines “New Life gets chop from N.V. District”, this is not altogether true as no one is likely to stop New Life from continuing to provide their service. in the District of North Vancouver. New Life has made that decision for the District. We refuse to continue to lose money to the benefit of North Vancouver District. Recently a waste paper brokerage company has offered to provide the same services to the District at no charge to the District. In the words of Ald. Powell, they are prepared to take a “short term loss for a long term ew wv Lif gain”. Powell overlooks that New Life Recycling Ltd. has taken a long term loss for no gain. It is New Life who has developed and maintained resource recovery on the North Shore for nearly five years. Ald. Powell says that the brokerage company appears to be “a highly efficient group”. It surprises me that Ald. Powell has taken such interest in this Vancouver based Company of foreign interests while he has never shown any interest in his local recycling firm. Ald. Powell has never returned ~ any of my phone calls. In council on Monday Powell said that he felt that the North Vancouver ‘Disreputable’ tenants blight Hamilton Fell Dear Editor: As residents of Hamilton- Fell we strongly object to the area being labelled a “crime ridden slum” (council meeting, Sept. 30) The majority of homes, although small by today’s standards, are very well maintained. These, of course, are owner-occupied. It’s the revenue properties, immediately recognisable as such, that are being allowed to deteriorate, and here is the truly shocking part — ON PURPOSE! One absentee landlord, angered by council's delay in rezoning the area, has vowed to let his property literally crumble -down around his disreputable tenants. We've never before witnessed the deliberate destruction of a neigh- bourhood and are appalled by council's lack of action. Responsible homeowners in Hamilton-Fell must organize and demand their rights. By-laws must be enforced in this area, as diligently as they are in the rest of the city. Where else in North Vancouver would you see front lawns turned into junkyards (reminiscent of Sanford & Son) or double trailer trucks and buses parked on _ residential streets? Then there is the motorcytle gang which has terrorized the entire neighbourhood for well over a year, tearing up and down the streets like fiends out of hell. If Mayor Loucks is no longer in control of the situation, we suggest he resign. In case of the reprisals from the above mentioned gang, we would appreciate your not printing our name and address. Mr. and Mrs. G.N. North Vancouver District should not subsidize private enterprise, “especially not one which was started with public funds”. Had Powell done his homework he would know that New Life Recycling Ltd. is the only residential waste recovery operation in this province which was not started with public funds. Between January 1977 and November 1980 New Life received no subsidization from any le «. of govern- ment. In November 1980 West Vancouver began paying New Life for working one day each week main- taining their trial collection for glass, metals, and newspaper on garbage days in the Chartwell-Ambleside Districts, a costly but ef- fective operation (22% of waste recovered). August 18, 1980, the District of North Vancouver began paying New Life Featuring. . . STORE WIDE Drop by and brouse around our showroom. HARLINGY JEWELLERS #26 1501 Lonsdale Avenue, North Vancouver 986-4216 Recycling $6.35 per ton for newspapers recovered in the District, which represents the tipping fee at the landfill site. That contract expires on Monday. Prior to that we have been providing a free service to the District of North Vancouver for 4'4 years, at a loss. In light of the recent offer from another firm to provide the same service as provided by New Life for no charge, the District should take a serious look at the offer but beware. The other company has no interests other than recovering paper for a profit. At present they are not interested in developing methods for recovering other less viable materials, - Such as glass and metals. I have encouraged the District -of North Vancouver to insist on a substantial performance bond from any new ap- plicants for the job to ensure Seiko Watches, Cultured Pearts, Gold Chains, Bracelets, Pen- dants, Diamond Rings, Earrings, Cross Pens, etc. A7 - Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1981 - North Shore News. that the job be done properly and for the duration of the contract. My fear is that people tend to un- derestimate the costs of providing the service. I did! New Life Recycling began as a philosophical and idealistic organization which wanted to prove that the recovery of waste for recycling could be viable and effective on the North Shore. To the greater extent we have proven this and have built the largest and most financially independent recovery organization in ‘this province. Regardless of New Life Recycling’s destiny my major concern is that our efforts of five years should not be wasted and forgotten in the years to come Bruce Culver, Principal, Recycling North Vancouver New Life Jeweticry Appraisals and Repairs See us if you need evaluation for in- surance (or other) pur- poses. ° Fast reasonably priced repair - on any repairable item. | For information or a free estimate, drop in or phone UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT \fter spending Kristiansson. tour host. has t the cnange s inch ade a ckerph ast | TRY OUR AGED PRIME RIB with stuffed potato or rice, agrear Gears aken rater ; nel ' cibly Sand Pron bby?
