POTTERS EDMONTON (UPC) --A survey of 1,500 Grade 8 pupils in Edmonton carried out last year for the local board of health shows that the vast majority of the students have nutritional problems. The survey, released Tuesday, said the diets of 82 per cent of the pupils did not meet minimal nutritional intakes recommended for Canadians. Furthermore, the problems found did not fit the stereotype of teen- agers feasting on junk food. Nutritionist Cathy Camp- bell said 80 per cent of the students rated their dietary habits as the same or vir- tually the same as those of their families. “Over 85 per cent of those surveyed said they ate breakfast and supper at home, 65 per cent ate af- ternoon snacks at home and more than 75 per cent ate their evening snacks at home... Less than 5 per cent reported they ate = at restaurants and fast food outlets,” she said. The survey said the major problem resulted from “choosing inadequate SPECIAL PRICES Jenn-Air’s Grill-Range makes amounts of food from each of the four food groups” specified in the Canada Food Guide —. milk and milk products, fruits and vegetables, bread and cereals and meat and alter- natives. “Most teens chose some foods from each of the four food groups but not in adequate amounts” for a balanced diet, Campbell said. The survey showed no “clustering” of nutritional problems in any part of the city. “We have no evidence to support socio-economic criteria (for the nutritional problems) but we dont’ rule it out,” Campbell said. Information provided by the survey will give direction for the planning of nutntion education programs, Campbell added. “Nutrition- alists here will be giving adolescents top priority this fall. The results show students may be _ facing serious health risks if they don’t improve their diet.” The survey also showed eight per cent of the students were Overweight and 18 per cent were underweight. creative cooking easy with convertible cooktops.
