(Terry Peton photo) STORY AND PHOTOS BY TERRY PETERS It’s just beginning to catch on in Canada but BMX (bicycle moto- cross) actually began several years ago in California where it rapidly gaimed popu- larity and started to spread. The first race sanctioned by the National Bicycle Association was held June 6 at China Creck Park in Vancouver where a course has been established. Similar in concept to moto-cross, the rider must go over jumps and bumps around banked and flat curves all the while racing against the clock. Unlike moto-cross there is no noise problem, so a track could be located anywhere without bothering residents. There are new tracks under construction in Richmond and Langley but none to date on the North Shore While they must practice in Vancouver, there is a strong North Shore team. Sponsored by Outrageous Cycle there is still room on the team for good riders and anyone interested should visit the store at 1405 Hunter in North Vancouver. Store owner John Williams has discovered a growing interest in the sport. “I've found that the same group that enjoys skateboarding are the ones that pick up on BMX first. There's a certain devil may care attitude that is present in both § sports.” Williams belicves that “BMX will become the biggest sport for young teenage boys.” So when Friday evening comes around and you'd like to see something different, head over to China Creck Park at Broadway and Gien tn Vancouver and cheer on the Outrageous riders, admission is free and it happens cvery Friday at 8:00 pm Taylor Horseshoe Lifering PARK ROYAL SOUTH 922-4151 6776 Marine Dr 921-7431
