Hill Seventy-five years ago a distinctively British estate was being created on the north shore of Francis Willim Caulfeild, — English county gentleman from Cornwall, and a one-time manager of Lloyds Bank _ deeply establishment of a little community with an old English flavour set amid the rugged natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. During the typical ‘‘tourist’s discovery’’- of reater Van- couver, he chanced upon a meeting with Captain Cates, the well-known North Van- couver pioneer. The captain took Mr. Caulfeild and his daugher on a cruise of the harbour aid surrounding areas. Upon seeing ‘‘Skunk Cove’’ (now Caulfeild Cove) near Lighthouse Park, an immediate love affair was sparked. The following year _Caulfeild purchased ‘the area from Johr Balfour Ker, who had acquired the land from Nils Frolander, the original owner. The 56-year-old English- man was particularly struck by the rugged beauty and natural grandeur of the area and swore that this would never be destroyed. H.A. Stone described the area of Caulfeild Village in his publication of 1939. ‘‘The entire district was heavily timbered, very rocky and difficult to survey or clear. The grand old evergreen trees, the Douglas firs and cedars abounded, as also did the spruce, hemlock and balsam trees, the colourful arbutus, maples and the innumerable and beautiful dogwoods, and _ flowering shrubs. “The ground was carpeted with ferns, Oregon grape and mosses, together with many varieties of lilies and wild flowers.
