Terry Peters Book Reviews 8 Women by Annie Leibovire and Susan Sontag, Random House, 246 pages, $115. A book of photographs that depict the great variety within a minority croup would draw limited attention, but here the minority is in eversthing but numbers. Celebrated photographer Annie Leibovitz curns her star-studded camera towards women of all walks of life. Leibovitz focuses on the unknown, the downtrodden, the average, the famous, and the powerful. Their common bond is uheir gender but it’s a link without emphasis, as cach subject is brougat in tront of the camera and allowed to stand alone, an individual worthy of consideration. The subject of women is given close scrutiny by gifted writer Susa. Sontag in her essay within the buok. “One of the tasks of pho- tography is to disclose, and shzpe our sense of, the variety of the world. {cis not to pre- sent ideals, ‘There is no agen- da except diversity and inter- est. There are no judgments, which of course is itself'a judgment.” The images combine to form a powerful collective, a very human subject, full of strengths and weaknesses. The combination of Leibovitz’s outstanding pho- tos and Sontag’s thoughr- provoking writing create a work greater than the sum of its parts. “A bouk of photographs; a book about women, a very American project: generous, ardent, inventive, open- ended. It’s for us to decide what to make of these pic- tures. After all, a photograph is not an opinion. Or is it?” & Stightly Out of Focus by Robert Capa, Random House, 236 pages, $37.95. Robert Capa is recognized as one of the greatest war hotojournalists in history. His willingness to put himself at risk to get better pho- tographs is legendary. The maxim: he passed on to other hotographers and one he ived by was, “If your pictures aren’t good enough, you're not close enough.” In the Second World War, Capa ‘was constantly in the forefront of the action. He landed «vith the first wave of troops on Omaha Beach on D-Day, he parachuted behind enemy Lines in Germany for the final assault on Berlin, and much more. Stighely Out of Focus is his account of that war, from his arrival in Engiand in 1941 to the German surrender in See Books Page 17 osing Out Sa 40-96% OFF MOTHER and daughter: Gwyneth Paltrow and Blythe Danner were photographed by Annie ‘.eibowitz for her new book Women.
