10 - Wednesday, August 10, 1994 - North Shore News Off-duty officer chased exposer From page 3 the women's facility so early. We did plan to sublease, but security issues scared away our subleaser,” he said. But, said Wood, “I am not con- vinced that there was a pervert around (and) I’m not willing to sug- gest to you that this is a problem at Capilano Mall,” said Wood. North Vancouver RCMP, how- ever, confirm that they received and responded to calls as recently as July 13 and July 15 about a man who waited in a stairwell and followed women while rubbing his penis. In an incident last fall, an off- duty RCMP officer who happened to be a club member was leaving the fitness centre via the parkade when she was confronted by a man who was masturbating. The officer pursued the man, who she describes as being white, approximately 1,8 metres tall (6 ft.), and weighing 83 kilograms (185 Ib.). The man had dark brown curly hair and wore black cycling shorts and a T-shirt. The man was chased to a stair- well, but managed to elude the offi- cer. . The RCMP responded to the call, but the suspect was never appre- hended. That incident, like most others, took place during the day and was the first incident that the woman was personally involved in at the club, where she had been a fitness rem- ber for several months, Fitness manager Sharyne Herbert said when she brought her concerns about security to Wood she reccived little in the way of response. In a letter to Wood that outlined her concerns, Herbert wrote that she was worried not only for the safety of Gold’s customers, Capilano shoppers in general. “These weirdos do not single out (Gold’s) staff and club members to targel,” stated Herbert. Herbert’s letter to Wood contin- ued, “You also told me mall security was basically there for retail only... We have had men ejaculating (on). our windows and you say it’s not the mall’s cesponsibility to provide a safer environment.” “Are we supposed to be protect- ing all the women in the mall?” asked Herbert. The issue of security for the Women Only facility appears to have been contentious for quite some time in part because the fitness centre was open later than the mall’s regular hours three days per week. In correspondence to Baumgartner, Wood stated, “Since your operation is in yse far beyond the normal operating hours of either the office building or the shopping centre, it may be advisable to pro- vide a doorman for your patrons ... early mornings and late evenings.” Wood confirmed that the mall's contracted security service did not concentrate its efforts around the gym during those hours, even though it was the only tenant open at the time. “It would take away from the rest CORRECTION NOTICE In our B7-1A White Sale flyer, Storklings Eliana Crib on page 30 should read “4-position mattress support”. At those times, according to Baumgartner, “They (Capilano Mall) consider cleaning staff, which includes semi-retired men and women over 50 years of age, to be their security staff...” Responding to Baumgartner’s allegations, Wood said, ‘certainly we consider them to be security.” Sgt. Jack Ewert of the North Vancouver RCMP said reported incidences of indecent exposure at North Shore malls are rare. According to Ewert, the depar- ture of Women Only from the mall may resolve any problems that haw developed while the gym was at the mall.
