The film chronicles the ascent to the throne of

what “anti-Merchant Ivory.” Their films are light,
both literally and subscantively. Elizabeth i is rich, dark; brutal.

Compare a chablis to a cabernet.

Although the year is 1554, the central theme i isa im
one. Elizabeth must choose between ‘carcer and lov

alliance with France or Spain would be:a strategic move; but

might vex the loser. She decides not to: marry, to rule on her:
own merit, and to become an icon for. the ke of
try.

Elizabeth is already generating all sorts ‘of O:
deservedly so. The film’is a very ‘good adaptati
slice of English history. .
