MARTIN and family thank the people who helped to save their lives recently in Horseshoe Bay. The family and two friends were fishing from a boat just outside of Horseshge Bay. Three members of the party felt tired and went below deck for a nap. The three suffered carbon monox- ide poisoning. Once ashore they were assisted: by emergency crews. Judy and Beth of the Spirit Gallery helped cut to replace the soaked clothing of one teen who had fallen into the water. Paul Peterson at Troil's supplied the hot drinks to warm the shaken boaters. Said Martin, “We are all delighted and over- whelmed by the attitude and compassion that were given us at Horseshoe Bay.” BY ANNA MARIE D'ANGELO News Reporter MIKE NICELL is one of three members of the Coho Festival Society of the North Shore to recently be named honorary life member. Niecll is a founding mem- ber of the society started ithout 17 years ago to suppert salmon enhancement projects on the North Shore. “The fish were a wonder- ful opportunity to do some- thing locally,” recalled Nicell about the beginnings of the Coho Festival Society. Nicell, along with News columnist Noel Wright and former West Vancouver Chamber ol Commerce presi- dent David Bakewell were all given honorary life member- ships at the society's recent annual general meeting. Nicell said that the Coho Festival Society began humbly. At the time, the West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce was being revital- ized with about 30 new mem- bers. “We had to give them something to do,” said Nicell. As manager of Eaton's in Park Royal Shopping Centre, Nicell was aware of the salmon that swam to the ocean through the neigh- boring Capilano River. He was also aware that the salmon were an impor- tant resource that needed help and _ Support from the public. Over the years, the Coho Festival Society has raised more than $150,000. The money has gone to West Vancouver and North Vancouver pub- lic schools for salmon projects and to North Shore hatcheries. The society's fundraising: effort cumulates each year with the Coho Festival. Last year, 1.700 people came to the barbecue at Ambleside Park. Volunteers for the festival numbered 350. Nicell served as president of the Coho Festival for several’ years’ and has acted as honorary chairman’ for the last three | years, : Another. honorary life member, Bakewell currently lives on the Sunshine Coast.
