NORTH VANCOUVER DISTRICT COUNCIL By Martin Millerchip Plans were also approved that will see individuals and businesses receive awards for “exemplary environmental stewardship and awareness.” Award certificates were presented by North Vancouver District. Mayor Murray Dykeman and district planner Phillip Chapman to seven groups representing approximately 250° volun- teers. The volunteers have plunt- ed over 1.100 trees in district parks and open spaces from Capilano to Seymour during the last year. Award recipients were: 8 John Irlam, Lynda Derkach und the students — of Montroyal elementary school; ; @ Denise LaPrairie and the’ students of Brooksbank ele- mentary school; @ Ray Schidlo and the stu- dents of Balmoral secondary school; @ Krysha Derbyshire and members of the 25th North Vancouver Girl Guides: Ron Rogers and the B.C. Hydro Employee Volunteers; @ the YMCA, ; @ Chery! Webster and the Evergreen Foundation for organizing, training and coordinating the volunteer groups with district parks staff, Retiring members of the district's Street Tree Plan Advisory Committee were also presented with award certificates for the develop- ment and implementation of the district's Street Tree Master Plan, adopted by council in 1993, ; Receiving awards were Ron Caswell, Larry Wick and Art Beck. “The care and involve- ment of volunteers such as yourselves in our community is one of the most important reasons we have such a great place to live,” Dykeman told the award recipients. Council later approved the costs associated with the cre- ation of an annual award pro- gram for environmental stew- ardship. North Vancouver District will be advertising for the nomination of individuals, groups, clubs and businesses in areas such as restoration projects, community educa- tion, exemplary volunteer service and outstanding new initiatives.
