TED WHITE. MP for North Vancouver, blasted bureaucrats in the Human Resources Ministry for overruling his recommendations on cuts to grants under the SEED sum- mer employment program for stu- dents, “Et is outrageous that unclected, unaccountable bureaucrats can ignore input from an MP," said White. “They are supposed to be public servants, not public enemies. Taxpayers in North Vancouver help to pay the salaries of these people but have no way to stop the uncon- trolled dispensing of tax dollars to special interest groups. “I was elected to represent the (PRE-SEASON SKI SALE! Friday, August 19, 1994 - North Shore News - § North Vancouver Reform MP angered by federal bureaucrats voters of North Vancouver and in good faith t sampled their opinion on these grants through a commit- tee selected at random from the vot- ers list. E then passed their recom- mendations on to the department.” White continued. “We are supposed to be living in a democracy butan MP has no way of preventing bureaucrats froim doing whatever they want with tax- payers’ money. What sort of democracy is that?" Grant applications rejected by MPs are routinely sent to the minis- ter for what amounts to rubber stamping the recommendations of the department staff. White has decided to reject auto- matically all future applications for graats so that the minister, Lloyd Axworthy, is forced to be directly accountable for future special inter- est group funding decisions in North Vancouver. “It is extremely frustrating that a conscientious MP who is trying to be a fiscal watchdog for his taxpay- ers is powerless to control the purse strings,” said White. “This government is spending $110 million more per day than it collects in taxes yet it does every- thing possible to prevent MPs from helping to stop the waste. No won- der spending is out of control.” THE PERFECT COMBINATION!
