By Surj Rattan News Reporter Cpl. Les Loden of the Van- couver RCMP’s customs and ex- cise section said the police, along with members of the Canada Customs alcohol and tobacco an- licsmuggling unit, pulled over a car on Marine Drive on Aug. 17 and confiscated 1,050 cartons of Canadian brand cigarettes fol- lowing an anonymous tip. He said the estimated street value of the seized cigarettes is $52,500. The cigaretics were seized under the provisions of the British Col- umbia provincial Tobacco Tax Act. Loden said that one male was arrested and smuggling-related charges are pending. He added that the cigarettes had not been stolen. “There's a lot of activity of this sort going on. There's a lot. of money to be made from selling cigarettes." , Loden added that he could not offer any more details because the case is still under investigation. But one North Vancouver RCMP constable told the News that the cigarettes were seized on one of the three North Vancouver native reserves. Loden would not comment when asked if there was a link between the arrest and seizure of the cigarettes and any of the North Shore’s native bands. In February, a.man and a woman from the Squamish Indian Band reserve were arrested after five people hijacked a transport truck loaded with approximately $500,000 worth of cigarettes. The hijackers locked the driver of the truck in the trunk of a car and drove the truck to the Squamish Indian Band’s Mission Reserve in North Vancouver, where they attempted to transfer the cigarettes imo a building once used as an arcade and cigarette store.
