of Oct. 14, requires a editorial **Survey sense,’’ response. Both West and North Van- a couver school districts have ref- mused to participate in a youth health survey, and in my opinion, rightly so. There are 120 questions in the survey, many of which are leading 4 and suggcstive. To cite an exam- 7 ple, question 48 is: “How cld were you when you ssed any form of cecaine, including powder, crack or freebase, for the first y time?”’ The responses to choose from are: - [have never tried cocaine - less than 9 years old - Jor 10 years old - flor [2 years old - 13 or 14 years old - 15 or 16 years ofd Hy) - 17 or more years old As a parent of three school- aged children, as an educator, and as the official -Opposition educa- tion critic, 1 cannot support such & loaded survey and endorse the position taken by both North Shore districts, There is no question the infor- faation sought is vital, but the method of obtaining that infor- mation through this survey is unacceptable. Jeremy Dalton, MLA West Vancouver-Capilano Police face reverse racism Dear Editor: isn’t it funny that a black ref- ugee killed a white police officer and society isn’t in an uproar? Why aren’t the white people rioting? Where are all the civil rights advocates now? . Where jis our favorite Van- couver criminal lawyer and all his citizens’ rights activists who are always critical of the police and - crying out for citizens’ rights? What happened to the police ‘officers’ rights? Oh! I forget, police officers are exempt of rights. and freedoms under the Charter! You can be sure that if it were the other way around, a white police officer, defending his life, kills a.black criminal, they would all be screaming for an investiga- tion. The media would be having a field day, demanding that the police defend their actions on the front page. But a police officer is murdered walking back to his vehicle and it is buried in the paper. A few months ago in North Vancouver Daniel Possce was shot by the police.. The above-men- tioned people, along with the media, were in a frenzy, criticizing the police for being trigger-happy in a justified shooting. Well, the officer in Calgary didn’t’ get that chance walking back to his car. How about these critics explaining that to his widow and children? As is typical of life in Canada in the '90s, this police officer in Calgary is not only a victim of a pathetic criminal justice system, but of the good old double stand- ard: reverse racism. This is what the police in canada deal with on a regular asis. B. Brewer North Vancouver Newcomer encounters Collins Dear Editor: . It seems to me that the North Shore News must at least implicit- ly agree with the tone and conient of Doug Collins’ article in the Sept. 16 issue, otherwise you might have been too embarrassed to publish it. As a newcomer to North Van, | hope that ‘The Voice of the North Shore*‘ really isn’t the voice of the North Shore.
