Youngson’s commitment to help- ing the ill. Her own experience, she says, has given her first-hand insight into what other families go through. Now she spends much of her time showing those families that they can survive the trauma. **I was very lucky that I had the support of my husband and my kids. Other people don’t have any support, and that can be grim."’ So far, about $819,000 has been pledged towards Canuck Place, still short of HUGS (Human Un- derstanding, Growth and Sharing) Children’s Hospice Society’s goal of roughly $3 million. Youngson has worked hard with — Eng to form a board and recruit volunteers. So far, 50 people have pledged their support. It was left in a will to the City of Vancouver. There was a public hearing in June, which received very little negative input. But we still don’t know what wil! happen. If we lose it, it will be tack to the drawing board. But it won’t be the end of the world.” Will it be the first children’s hospice in North America? “We're saying it is, aithough there “is a place for kids with AIDS in Washington, D.c, Hospice care is - stili-in its infancy in Canada. The movement was already in full swing in England before arriving in North America.
