NEWS BRIEFS sewel heist TWO MASKED men escaped with approximately $8,000 worth of jewelry following an Aug. 11 smash-and-grab robbery at Birks Jeweliers in Park Royat South. According to u West Vancouver Police spokesman, the robbery occurred at about 12:40 p.m. The pair entered the store and smashed two display cases with sledgehammers. The police - subsequently recovered a.stolen vehicle believed to have been used by the two thieves. The car, a 1986 blue Honda Accord, had been reported stolen in Vancouver earlier that day and was found parked at a Capilano Rosd motel. The police believe the suspects fled on foot. One of the men is described as being a biond-haired Caucasian male, 19 ‘¢ 20 years of age, 5°11" to six feet in height and weighing about 150 pounds. Soldiers to Croatia THE NORTH Shore-based Six Field Squedron will he sending more military engineers to Croatia as past of a support unit for UN forces active in what was once Yugoslavia. Seventeen troops will join the 1 Combat Engineer Regiment based at Cacedian Forces Base Chilliwack. Heroin hearing TWO PEOPLE arrested by the North Vancouver RCMP and the West Vancouver Police and charged with possession of heroin for the purpose of trafficking will appear in North Vancouver provincial court on Aug. 26 for a bail hearing. Ivan Pelegrin, 36, of Crontia acd Marija Kokanovic, 24, of Australia, made a brief appearance in North Van- conver provincial court on Wednesday moraing. The pair were arrested in Vancouver on Aug. 8 by North Vancouver RCMP and West Vancouver Police drug squad members, who seized approximately three pounds of pure, uncut heroin with an estimated street value of $3.5 miltion. The police investigation began in North Vancouver and extended into West Vancouver and Vancouver. Crown prosecutor Jay Straith said he will ask that the bail spplication for Pelegrin and Kokanovic be denied. Lonsdale upgrade NORTH VANCOUVER City is asking all merchants, office managers and property owners in the central and lower Lonsdale Avenue commercial districts to attend a Lonsdale Revitalization Start-Up meeting at city hall, 144 West 14th St., at 7 p.m. on Aug. 18. City planner Gary Penway said the first part of the Lonsdale study will identify problems currently facing the two areas and establish goals to make them more commercially viable. The study’s second phase will establish actions to achieve those goals. A consultant team made up of John Talbot and. Associates, Harris Hudema Market Analysts and David- son Yuen Architects will lead the study. They wili also be at the Aug. 18 meeting to answer any questions. The siudy’s terms of reference and a draft set of ques- tionuaires wilt be presented at the public meeting. The Lonsdele Revitalization Initiative project is being funded by both the city and the provincial government. Leo Csada, 38, of North Vancouver, suffered head in- juries in the crash and was transported to Lions Gate Hospital.
