Louise Aird BRIGHT LIGHTS ENT BACK to Dianne Farris’ Gailery April 29 for the opening of Van- couver artist Tiko Kerr's ex- hibit. The exhibit, which runs to May 19, features works from-Kerr’s re- cent Halian tour, after which he painted what he'd seen — beautifully. The crowd was young and fash- ionable. Farris — wisely targeting new markets — has hired former Cardinal Gallery staffer Anne Macaulay to work with the under-35s, who generally have lit- tle art and lots of cash. And what could be more fashionable than collecting good art? . Charming West Van educator Bill Keary was there, as was West Van native Shannon Walker, with North Van’s Ryan French, and West Van actor Cameron Ban- croft, late of Beachcombers. Shannon is the co-owner of C'est Ca, the chi chi Homer Street boutique popular with the young, hip and unpoor. Bancroft is fresh from shooting the pilot for a new Aaron Spelling series Round Table, which sounds something like Dynasty meets E.N.G. xk kk The April 30 Movie Magic gala was unusual. Movie Magic was, as you know, a sost of film-industry Expo — a first for Vancouver. And the organizers — L.A. producers David Nielsen and Vancouver's Dave Abbott — did a great job, thanks also to a whopping 73 sponsors and numerous volun- teers. The gala, a benefit for the B.C. Paraplegic Association (BCPA), was held amid the partially com- pleted exhibition sets at B.C. Place Stadium, and there were about 500 people there. The gala obviously didn‘t turn out exactly as planned. Some of the stars — Brigitte Nielsen and Robert Downey fr., for example — cancelled. Three overly officious security guards were unnecessary, but they did a nice job of keeping the front-door groupies — all nine of them — at bay. SIDLING UP to ialler-than-he- looks-on-TV Winston Reckert {photo left, centre) are Khrystyne Haje (left, of Head of the Class fame) and ECO Canada's Polly Doven at the Movie Magic gala. He of the Naked Gun, Leslie Neilsen (photo right), gives a grin at the gala, where he was emcee. Photos Loulse Aird PLEASE DON'T confuse these two hockey guys ...Trevor Linden And we had to enter through the airlock in shifts. The door would tise, five peaple wauld go in, the (photo top left) and Petr Nedved (photo left) spotted at the new Double Oyertime. And West Van actor Cameron Bancroft popped “jn to the Diane Farris Gallery Tiko Kerr exhibit, along with West Van native Shannon Waikes and North Vanner Ryan French. door would shut, and 10 people were leit waiting for it to open again. Yawn. The crowd was a mix of BCPA supporters, socialites, film techni- cians, media personalities and ac- tors. Former Beachcomber Bruno Gerussi was there with his girlfriend, West Van judge Nancy Morrison. Head of the Class student Khrystyne Haje schmoozed with ECO Canada’s Polly Doven and Neon Rider's Winston Reckert (he’s taller than he toaks on TV), and Ray and Grace McCarthy both looked terrific — politics can't be healthy. The majority of the women, however, weren't dressed to par and one woman at my table judg- ed the Wicked Witch of the West to be best-dressed, saying ‘At least her green shoes match her face." The aiter-dinner show was im- pressive — a dance routine by the Fraser Valley Dance Centre was excellent. Impersonator Tracey Bell did two fabulous fip-sync perfor- mances — of Marilyn Monroe and Liza Minelli. We weren't sure if the skipping record at the end of New York, New York was intentional. 1 don’t think it was, but watching Bell try- ing to keep up with e ery other - line in a song out-of-control was a scream. Everyone's favorite Naked Gunman Leslie Nielsen was good as the emcee, but his duties in- cluded standing in front of Shag-Ra the Singing Horse, while the poor beast (the horse) ‘sang’ to him. And there was an embarrassing moment when the sta7s had to get up on the stage so we could clap at them. Kudos definitely go to North Van’s Jean Jacques Aaron, late of Settebello and Whistler's Club Ten, now the stadium’s Catering Manager. He and former Pan Pacific chef - Tony Heesterman provided an outstanding dinner (shrimp, duck, Papaya mousse). kx k We left the gala just before the meavie memorabilia auction was to begin, and went across the street to the opening of ‘Double Over- time,’ an old garage converted in- to a sports bar/restaurant co- owned by Geoff Courtnall and Mark Engels. f presume the food is OK — everyone was wolfing it down. The decor needs help — the walls are a sickly beige and there are odd bits of old sports equipment nailed awkwardly to the walls. But there are three TVs, some . interesting vintage sports photos, and | liked the tables — they’re completely covered in trading cards so you always have some- thing to read. Most of the Vancouver Canucks were there. Two hours earlier, they'd bumped Winnipeg out of the play-uils and you'd think they'd be celebrating, but they were somewhat subdued. To Mr. Kaltenbach ... if ! were you, I'd suggest to your diminutive waiter that he not insult members of the West Van Newcomer's Club by implying that they drink too much wine over lunch. These things have a way of becoming topics of conversation at the club’s monthly ‘‘Stitch & Bitch’ ses- sions... And to Mr. Ritchie ... With runn- ing vacuum in hand, one of your busboys recently insulted a pro- minent West Van couple and their guests by telling them — not ask- ing them — to leave, offering the dubious piece of logic that, since they were the last ones in the res laurant. it must be time to close the restaurant.
